Everywhere this has been tried, productivity has rocketed, workers have been happier, and bosses have been keen to adopt it permanently. There is no rational argument against shortening the working week. Which explains why the Victorian pencil is its most vocal opponent.

I’ve been a teacher since 2020. I’ve worked in 4 schools. In 2 of those 4, I’ve questioned if I wanted to stay in teaching. In 2 of those 4 schools, I’ve loved every waking moment of teaching. Environment plays a pivotal role in your enjoyment of teaching. #edutwitter

Can you believe that there’re STILL schools out there that require: - Marking books ‘every 2 weeks’ - Written lesson plans (for obs) - Data-based performance management targets Imagine doing all that in the middle of an R&R crisis. The grass really is greener elsewhere!

@Headteacherchat We assign HPC periods to anyone under load and this is popular with staff as they know when they are likely to pick up a cover. We also have increased our internal cover team to support relationships with students 👍🏻

Anon post: Has anyone tried an overstaffing model where teachers have a reduced teaching timetable with allocated cover lessons? Our secondary school is considering this to improve workload and cover arrangements. Interested in hearing your experiences!
