Originally designed by Nicolai Eigtved in the late Baroque style, construction was halted for over a century before finally being completed in 1894 under architect Ferdinand Meldahl. Its dome, inspired in part by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, remains one of the largest church domes in Scandinavia.

The interior walls of the church were originally covered in medieval paintings dating from the mid-14th century through the 16th century. When the interior was restored to suit Lutheran worship in the 17th century, the murals were painted over, and eventually they were uncovered in the 20th century. The church also features a Renaissance organ, built in 1491, which still functions today.

The Petäjävesi church was built and designed by a Finnish church builder Jaakko Leppänen. His grandson Erkki Leppänen built the Petäjävesi bell tower. Most churches in Finland were built and designed by regular Finnish craftsmen.

The Old Church was built entirely of pine logs, and its interior has been preserved to its original design. The pulpit, pews, galleries, and chandeliers were all hand-carved from pine wood by local craftsmen, and remain largely as they were when the church was first built.

It was not until 1952, following negotiations between the Royal Danish Embassy and The Crown Estate, that St. Katharine's became a Danish Lutheran church By that point, the congregation had already maintained a presence in London for over 250 years. Their previous home was a church in Wellclose Square, built in 1696 by Caius Gabriel Cibber, a sculptor born in Denmark.

Norwegian Lutheran settlers near the Crazy Mountains began holding house services around 1880, before formally organizing the congregation in 1885. After years of worship in homes and the local schoolhouse, the present Plain Gothic white wooden church was consecrated on November 29, 1914, becoming one of the most beautiful landmarks of frontier Lutheranism in Montana.

The Church of the Redeemer was built on Prussian-owned land in Jerusalem, and was dedicated on Reformation Day in 1898 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia. At the church's dedication, Wilhelm II said, "from Jerusalem came the light in splendor from which the German nation became great and glorious; and what the Germanic peoples have become, they became under the banner of the cross, the emblem of self-sacrificing charity."

May 18th marks the feast day of St. Erik, the king of Sweden who was martyred in 1160 and later became the nation’s patron saint. St. Erik has long been tied to Uppsala Cathedral. His relics are kept there in a medieval shrine, making the cathedral not only a great Lutheran church of the Church of Sweden, but also one of the chief historic sanctuaries of Swedish Christianity.
