...what if Rams use 2027 1RD to snag a player down the stretch to win the Super Bowl (like 2022), then Rams have no first rounder next year, and Stafford retires? No starter and no realistic transition plan. Could make up oddly specific 'what ifs' to fit a narrative all day
Frank Ammirante@FAmmiranteTFJ

Scenario: Matthew Stafford plays for 2026+2027 Ty Simpson starts in 2028. But is very inconsistent. Doesn't exactly cement himself as the locked-in starter. Then what? You've basically wasted 3 years of his rookie deal.

But, I completely understand how fans and pundits of teams that haven't sniffed a banner since Y2K would accept the tradeoff... ...hell, teams do it every year just to watch well-run organizations curb stomp them in the Playoffs

Win-now "at all costs" is why the Browns "win" the NFL Draft every April and are sitting at home every January... ...and why Rams went from Super Bowl Champions to missing the Playoffs, even with Stafford and Donald...

Pundits will also act as though Rams can't make in-season moves, should there be a need at WR3... ...just like they did during their last successful Super Bowl run. ...and still have "their guy" developing within the offense under the reigning MVP and McVay

One unfortunate aspect of the Ty Simpson pick is that pundits will use No.13 as a generic [fill in the position] talking point for whichever position inevitably struggles this season... ...an ambiguous, retrospectively-accurate criticism after every injury to OL, WR, DB, etc

@1RamsFan6 Agreed. Hence my original question about the Tee Higgins equivalent. I think the OP was making a days equivalence to the Rodgers situation without considering the roster context. Packers had a genuine need at WR2. Rams have no genuine needs that weren't addressed in FA

@TheNathanTK TE Ferguson will have more TDs than Higgins in 2026…We have 4 quality TEs and 3 backup WRs that already know the system. “WR 3” is irrelevant in 90% of their packages.

So strange to judge the NFL Draft in a vacuum, outside the context of the rest of the offseason.

The debate about Rams "need" for WR depth comes down to McVay scheme and philosophy. Based on recent comments, sounds like keeping 5 "playable" TE might be more important than 5 WR (i.e., TE4 > WR3)

Reasonable minds could conclude that there were likely only 1-2 potentially "starting" spots on the Rams 2026 roster: WR3, ILB2/Nickel ILB. However, there were several critical areas without a clear backup: CB, OL (broadly), QB. Rams addressed two of those spots.

Generally understand that "there are no luxury picks" crowd; ideally, there is always an optimized path, whereby you get your player and [insert bonus]. However, I also respect the "why risk it" crowd, especially when you have already spent a TON of capital on Trent McDuffie

Maybe... maybe not, right? Who know who might have traded up to consider snagging the only other potential 1RD graded QB in the draft. Snead said as much. Lack of certainty and no clear need = stick and pick.

"I think this is ridiculous... They had calls to trade back from the 13th pick. So do it! You move back 4 spots, you can still take Ty Simpson and you pick up a 3rd round pick." @DannyParkins reacts to the Rams picking Ty Simpson at No. 13 🗣️

...a nightmare of a nightmare. Dumb penalties. Dumb turnovers. Drops. Shanked field goals. Would be surprised if any player grades well this week. Miserable to watch a more talented team get out-executed. Especially a division rival with the easiest schedule in the NFL
