@AshleySinclair0 @JoshPhillipsPhD I am for holding them back till they achieve standards. No, most 18 year olds could not because they dont have the teaching pedigogy to do it. The ability to vary teaching styles and teaching methods is beyond 18 year olds

@TheNavigator73 @JoshPhillipsPhD 1. Correct. Forcing is bad. If they can't be responsible and make whatever happen to get the grade, fail them. I am 100% of with this. 2. Yes, most normal 18 yr olds could teach elementary and middle and some highschool classes.

Parents, I’m begging you, read to your children. Get them books. Lots of books. Silly books. Fun books. Chapter books. Anything. Get them to read consistently from 5-18 and they will be light years ahead of their peers when they get to college.

And teachers do that and a miriad of other things to get them to read but if the kid didnt have a good foundation before they got to school, they are already behind. Schools could go back to teaching phonics that would cerainly help the process.

@AshleySinclair0 @JoshPhillipsPhD And you literally cant force kids to do it. When teachers have tried to be tough on kids (to teach them) parents (probably like you) have literally obstructed the teacher from doing the job. But hey, any 18 year old can do a teachers job though, right?

@TheNavigator73 @JoshPhillipsPhD It is the teachers JOB. It is literally what we pay you to do. It's not the parents job, because they paid you to do it. It is their responsibility to make sure teachers ARE doing it or find new teachers who will/can.

It encourages kids to read (the love of reading) and as they have success doing it they build confidence doing it. If you are forced to do something you probably will hate it.. Like teachers forcing kids to read at school?

You are making that up. Fact is, parents reading to their kids when they are younger is the biggest factor of kids reading level

Inbetween classes they can get some reading in. And there should be time set aside during the day for reading if its impo

In the lower grades, take recess away from them (their only real physical outlet) and watch the fiasco that will follow in the classroom. In between classes? How much time do you think they get? Lunch- what about the kids who have to eat?
