The Origins of Skinny Dipping: A Tradition Older Than You Think: Rick Dorociak For many people, skinny dipping sounds like a modern adventure, a spontaneous swim under the stars or a carefree summer memory. In reality, swimming without clothing is one of humanity's oldest traditions. Long before swimsuits were invented, people around the world simply entered the water as they were. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans, often bathed and swam nude. Public baths, rivers, lakes, and coastlines were places where nudity was considered practical, natural, and completely ordinary. The Ancient Greeks, who celebrated the human body through art, athletics, and philosophy, believed that the nude body represented strength, beauty, and harmony. Even the word gymnasium comes from the Greek word gymnos, meaning "naked," because athletes trained and competed without clothing. Throughout much of history, swimsuits as we know them simply didn't exist. People who wanted to cool off in a river or enjoy a lake usually removed their clothes before entering the water. In many rural communities across Europe and North America, skinny dipping remained a common activity well into the 19th and even early 20th centuries. As industrialization, changing social customs, and Victorian ideas about modesty spread, attitudes toward public nudity gradually shifted. Swimwear became more common, and many places introduced rules requiring clothing at public beaches and pools. What had once been an ordinary part of daily life slowly became viewed as unusual or even taboo. Today, skinny dipping continues to be enjoyed around the world, particularly at clothing optional beaches, nudist resorts, and private gatherings. For many, it isn't about being rebellious, it's about experiencing the simple joy of swimming without restrictive clothing, feeling the water on your skin, and reconnecting with nature in one of the most natural ways possible. Perhaps that's why skinny dipping has endured for thousands of years. It reminds us that before fashion, before trends, and before swimsuits, there was simply the freedom of being human. Whether it's your first time, or like me, your hundredth, skinny dipping isn't just about leaving your clothes on the shore, or side of the pool, it's about rediscovering a tradition that has been part of the human experience since the beginning. Real Bodies. Real Life. Real Freedom. You are a Kick Ass Nudist. Rick

WNBR London 2026 Posters are now downloadable from our website at wnbrlondon.uk/posters Please use them considerately - with permission and in appropriate placements. We don't want to have a negative impact! The Date - SUNDAY 14th June 2026 Well, that might be a surprise! In recent years the Saturday has become increasingly busy with more traffic, events, road closures, diversions, crane operations, protests, counter-protests, police lockdowns, and, of course, the Trooping of the Colour. In 2026 we hope to have a better time by riding on the Sunday, 14th June. Our friends in WNBR Brighton were interested in moving to a Saturday, so we have swapped dates. We can never be 100% certain about the arrangements until close to the day, so we advise you not to make any firm travel plans unless you need to. Our dates, routes and timing always need to be reviewed and accepted by the police. There is also the chance of unanticipated events or occurrences that undo our plans - for example, pandemic, state visits, funerals, etc. But our plans are firmly focused on 14th June! #WNBRLondon #London #Cycling #Protest #safety #environment #climatechange #carculture #wellbeing #bodypositivity #bodyacceptance

United States of America . Indigenous Peoples practiced levels of #Nudity for comfort, ritual or environment. The Europeans viewed this lifestyle as primitive, largely trying to eradicate their traditions . #Naturism arose in the 1920s & centered itself around resorts and beaches
