This project aims to prevent an estimated 410–628 tons of plastic from entering the Pacific Ocean through the LA rivers each year, with deployments expected ahead of the LA28 Olympic Games.

This is the hell of plastic pollution. The photo shows Rio Motagua in Guatemala. It’s a horrible scene. There are many similar places across the globe. But the good news is that at the end of this year the beaches of Guatemala will come back to old splendor - white sands, blue oceans, green vegetation. This is thanks to The Ocean Cleanup. Their fantastic river interceptors today pick up 2 - 5 % of all plastics moving into our Ocean. Nearly all plastics coming into the Ocean originate in 1000 rivers. Ocean Cleanup is ready to vastly expand its operations. Nearly all of these rivers are in middle income countries. The rich have effective garbage collection. The poorest cannot afford much plastic. I had a wonderful conversation with Boyan Slat the founding father of Ocean Cleanup today. “This is the cheapest global problem to solve”, he said. A lot of waste flows to the ocean through rivers... But there's another source of ocean pollution: fishing gear. We've just joined @GGGInitiative (Global Ghost Gear Initiative), an alliance tackling ghost gear. Our research will contribute to GGGI’s shaping of policies and initiatives at both a national and international scale.

This is the progress we made towards clean oceans in April: 🔹Our research team published its 100th peer-reviewed research paper 🔹In Jamaica, Interceptor 015 captured tons of trash, including multiple fridges and even a couch 🔹Interceptor 023 in Honduras is stopping trash before it reaches the ocean - and performance improvements are underway 🔹 We’re bringing operations to the Philippines, with our first deployment in the Meycauayan River planned in the coming months 🔹 We renewed our partnership with Hyundai Glovis for another four years, which will help us expand our ADIS camera deployments to better map plastic pollution hotspots in the ocean.

Interceptor deployments are scheduled for the Philippines. 🇵🇭 As part of our 30 Cities Program, we will deploy our first Interceptor in the Meycauayan River in the coming months to prevent trash from flowing into the ocean from the Manila Bay Region.
