@ANNVYSHINSKY They also implicitly believe that conservatives are hard/cruel, but that it’s masculine, whereas liberals are (over)generous and soft, which is bad in men but good in women: annoying bug in an otherwise good program, so they think conservative women are broken somewhere upstream

@ANNVYSHINSKY They want women who don’t think hard or have strong opinions who will be molded by their man. The man can’t be held to any meaningful ideological standard. Women who stand for anything are too “masculine” I think they think most of those women are impressionable dumb liberals

@gunboneyard @Joshek83dg @RenyTure While I don’t agree with everything the meme is implying, the idea that having the most divergent “blueprints” wouldn’t lead to more divergent expressions of those blueprints is so unbelievably stupid it’s hard to wrap one’s head around

@gunboneyard @RenyTure Like why do bambuti, some of the shortest people in the world and the Dinka, some of the tallest people on earth, seem “phenotypically” similar to you? It’s because you’re prioritizing colonial racial distinctions

@gunboneyard @RenyTure I’m saying your lumping of certain features over others is arbitrary. Less than a century ago “science” thought Ethiopians and North Indians were racially “white” because skull shape mattered to them more than skin color. You could by eye shape, ear connectedness, anything.

@gunboneyard @RenyTure It literally does. People just don’t realize that there are literally millions of other ways to categorize people than skin/hair/eye color (and Africa has diversity of those too)

Deeply honoured to say that I am one of the recipients of an Early Career Fellowship! From May 2026, I’ll be spending 3 years at Edinburgh’s Art History department (@EdiArtHistory) to research Whiteness and Greco-Roman antiquity in 18th century British history paintings
The Leverhulme Trust@LeverhulmeTrust

From untangling the evolutionary roots of plant variation to how medieval nuns mastered the art of credit, we’ve had some fascinating applications for this year’s Early Career Fellowship scheme. The Trust is pleased to announce 152 Fellowships in this round. Congratulations to the 2025 cohort!

@okimstillhungry Something people love doing is calling punishment “consequence”/“accountability” because it, ironically, skirts accountability for what they’re actually doing. “You have done something bad and we are going to punish you”

@nrduford More directly relevant, we have sling bullets from the siege of an Italian city in 41BC that have writing on them. Some just have phalluses on them; others have phrases like “I’m going for [female leader’s] cl*t” and “you’re hungry (begging for it?) and hiding from me”

@nrduford If you want some ancient examples, here’s two. First, a wedding song from Catullus (62) in which he compares the wedding night to the siege of a city.

@beccajiggens @vjoshuaadams I agree talks aren’t articles, but the main difference I’d say is in how the material can be aurally processed and in pacing, not whether you use a script or not. Also you can write in “[riff about X here]” if you want to generally orient someone to something you’re displaying

@beccajiggens @vjoshuaadams Ideas should flow into one another. Recapitulation needs to be intentional but brief and as clear as possible. No coming up with shaky metaphors on the spot. Humanists do also do the former with archival material or teaching, but formal analysis talks are “about the words”

@chad85290 Nobody considered grape juice to be fine alcohol. The master of ceremonies remarked on how good the wine was.

@poperespecter1 @chad85290 Grape juice is a modern invention which didn't exist prior to 1869. It was invented by a Methodist pastor to help alcoholics take Christian Communion.

@SarahAHoyt @poperespecter1 @chad85290 They definitely had and drank grape juice as opposed to fermented wine. This is the distinction in Latin between “mustum” and “vinum”—OP is correct though. It wouldn’t be considered akin to a fine vintage

@poperespecter1 @chad85290 additional: Grape juice couldn't stay grape juice without modern pasteurization. So the entire concept of "grape juice" is extremely doubtful.

@fu53789 @KYNGNYXX @MandelaFace I may be wrong, but I think the argument is that the state shouldn’t exist or at the very least shouldn’t exist here and justice should move to communities. Less clear on what the “community” is here after the comment that cops operating extrajudicially are still the state

@KYNGNYXX @TheRafaelite @MandelaFace the government allowing people to kill whatever criminals they so choose is effectively identical to corporal punishment. It’s the government’s job to protect its citizens so if they withdraw that the moment they’re accused of a crime and just let a mob lynch the accused then a
