Rural Bengal is the decider - not us, posting on X or other platforms. The lay marginalised Hindu agricultural female worker, toiling away in 42” heat in a field in remote Bengal will play a major role. The Rs 1500 per month that this individual receives is her lifeline. Frankly, it will be difficult to change her mind. She lives for the day, being able to afford 2-3 basic meals is a win for her. She may have been abused sometime but ensure food for her family for a week, she’d forget everything and vote for the TMC. Has the BJP tapped into that rural woman’s base? If yes, then BJP’s chances are strong. The common semi urban and urban Bengali Hindu is largely oblivious to the changing demographics. They’re happy with their Arsalan Biriyani and OlyPub beefsteak. They will counter and argue loudly about how evil the BJP is, ironically sitting in their apartments in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Noida. They are massively divided still. Many of them are extremely active across social media, not finding it worth to travel to Be gal and voting for change. BJP may forget about half of this voter base. And finally, the obvious consolidation of muslim votes - muslims that have voted enmasse against the BJP with unfailing regularity. BJP might as well forget that chunk. As mentioned by several - the Hindus are the deciders and the Hindus will let the nationalist forces down. Only an event of the magnitude of the 1946 riots will awaken the Hindus. Until then it will unfortunately be the decisive forces ruling the roost in Bengal.

It is extremely difficult to dislodge TMC from Bengal. Bengal had 27% Muslims in 2011, now it may be anywhere between 32–35%. They all vote for TMC. Imagine going into a fight where you need 51% to win, and 32–35% is already in your kitty. The remaining 65–68% are divided. Some vote for TMC for its socialist policies, some out of fear of repercussions if they don’t, some belong to a self-proclaimed intellectual class whose sole identity is hating BJP, and some older voters remain loyal to the communists, effectively splitting the vote. So, BJP winning Bengal would be nothing short of a miracle. I hope it happens.
