@TheRavenRises @AlkanOkuducu An old infirmed 'beggar' magically transforming into a younger version of himself and change in clothing is what depicted as being better? I mean, it was supposed to be an epic movie, not something magical like Merlin. Let's be serious, come on! Nolan's ending was more realistic.

Cannot emphasize enough how dogshit this is comparatively. Especially given that this came out in 97 and somehow looks like it’s from the 1950s Lolol

@george_adams21 It is his take….but the 1997 version is a better story, both in terms of story and Hero…..Damon is a tortured soul who is riddled with guilt….i found this version of Odyseus hard to root for and love….more like an observational bystander.

Once you come to grips with the fact that Nolan’s Odyssey isn’t a faithful adaptation, you allow the movie to flourish for what it is This isn’t Lord of the Rings, the book transferred to screen, plot intact. Nolan’s Odysseus isn’t even funny or wily or cunning The confusion is Nolan’s own fault, in the best way. He brings Homer’s world to the screen so vividly (the Cyclops, the Sirens, Hades) that you assume you’re watching a faithful adaptation. So people grade it as one and count the deviations. But this isn’t Homer’s Odyssey, it’s Nolan’s Odyssey. Judge it there and it’s a beautiful film

#TheOdyssey is the best film of year so far. My goodness #ChristopherNolan reminds us that there are levels to this shit and he’s on a level that no one is on. Everything felt so real and lived in. The cyclops scene is genuinely one of the most terrifying cinematic experiences.

Unpopular opinion: The Odyssey isn't as good as Gladiator or Troy. Good film. Not worth the mega hype though

I don't want to talk about The Odyssey anymore but the last thing I'll say is that I love that there is a movie a lot of people went to see and are talking about it online. I think that's cool. It makes me miss the good old days.

I can’t believe people found a reason to bitch about The Odyssey. It was incredible. Some people just find any reason to whine.

@RichardERoeper I preferred the ending of the 1997 TV movie over Nolan’s version. I also preferred that story’s Hero over Nolan’s. A tortured soul, this Odysseus.

I'm so glad we're getting a historically accurate version of "The Odyssey," which features a sorceress who turns men into pigs, a Cyclops, the Lotus-Eaters, singing Sirens, six-headed sea monsters, gods who constantly meddle in human affairs, and a trip to the Underworld.

I saw The Odyssey yesterday. I thought it was a very good movie. I have some criticisms and disagreements. But, as I expected, Christopher Nolan deserved the benefit of the doubt. I’ll probably write about my deeper takes elsewhere, but I gotta say whatever you think about the movie, pro or con, I think the casting is one of the least important or interesting topics or themes sparked by the movie, even if you hated the casting. I get those criticisms as far as they go, I just don’t think they go nearly as far as the critics think.

So I saw The Odyssey last night - in a highly appropriate place to boot. A few thoughts. First, it's a very good film- emphatically (and obviously) not the woke caricature of lazy online criticism. It's beautifully shot, with some genuinely outstanding set pieces. One thing I found interesting: the cast is packed with English actors, all of whom adopt American accents. Usually it's the other way round in historical/fantasy epics (e.g. Game of Thrones). Perhaps it was to match Matt Damon, who I suspect can't do a British accent. But tbh it feels like an attempt to draw a subtle parallel between ancient Greeks and modern Americans. My only real criticism is a major one. The film omits Odysseus' encounter with Achilles in the Underworld - the philosophical heart of The Odyssey – when the greatest of the Greek heroes reveals that the glory he pursued wasn't worth the price of his life. It's one of the epic's defining moments, so its absence is genuinely baffling. Overall, though, a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience. A really good film, even if I wouldn't quite call it a great one.
