@evoecolab @urbanevol I can get a good deal for this rare one of an ivory-billed woodpecker. Just say when.

Our cool bird poop 💩 metabarcoding DNA analyses led by @slrogers27 and the @lesleybulluck lab revealed some interesting diet items 🪰🦋🐛🐚🕷 across an ever-increasing anthropogenic landscape 🤔
Joe Youtz@Joe_Youtz

Our preprint on nestling PROW diet using fecal metabarcoding is out in @AmOrnith We found that nestlings have a wide diet but aquatic prey may be especially important for development, but they may be declining due to human activities. academic.oup.com/auk/advance-ar…

To be fair, I actually didn’t notice and one of my grad students had to point it out, which is even more hilarious

I went to Antarctica and came back to the mystery of a missing door - they sealed up an old entrance for a new faculty lab renovation and NO ONE TOLD ME (not a single email! 😂)

@evoecolab @PetrovADmitri I think of three scenarios, with terms describing processes/units that (1) we don't fully understand like "epigenetics" and "plasticity", (2) have changed over time like "gene", (3) we understand but for which we misuse like "population", which I believe can be most confusing

A question for the hivemind. Which terms in biology (especially evolution, ecology, genetics) do you find slippery and confusing? Where you often feel that people use the same word but mean different things? E.g for me it’s fitness, epigenetics, niche, gene. Others?

@punished_cait Even if we leave aside the non-economic arguments: what do these people think will be the value of a business degree when the market is flooded with them?

And as luck would have it, I randomly bumped into my good friend @Dolf_DeJong in the exact place where we met 29 years ago.

In May I like to bird, butterfly and look at plants - it keeps me sane and reminds me why I got into biology. Today I did a "Big"(ish) day of birding in Presqu'ile Provincial Park. The map says it all ... 71.54km later on foot & I found 112 species. @BirdsCanada

It is unreasonably pleasing to me that folders entitled "First submission," "Second submission," and "Third submission" get ordered alphabetically.

@evolscientist I also like when a reviewer suggests the research could be improved by working with a particular author. And that author is already on the manuscript. And it wasn't a double-blind review.

Buddy they brought BACK Criminal Minds with a whole new plot line about how the pandemic caused serial killers to all work together?
Shawn Foss@Shawn_Foss

@janecoaston I'm curious how many people even know that Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods, and the Blacklist are all still running and releasing new episodes I feel like the average person under 60 has forgotten network TV even exists

Because of $$ crunch, Uni just cancelled 1,976 Springer journals and saved $4.3M. That's just Springer. 1,976. People, that's disgusting.
