My experience with VIO today.. This morning I went to pick up my renewed international passport. Everything went smoothly, so I started driving back home thinking it would be a normal day. I was wrong. On my way, I ran into VIO officers who stopped me and asked for my vehicle papers. I gave them everything. They checked and told me my insurance had expired. The funny thing is: I had already paid for the renewal the previous day. It was even showing online that payment had been made, but the physical copy wasn’t ready yet. Despite seeing the proof, they still asked me to follow them to their office. When I got there, they handed me a bill of ₦76,000. At that point I was already frustrated. I drove toward the gate to leave, but they blocked the exit and refused to let me go unless I paid. Then the story changed. Suddenly they said my safety triangle was “expired.” Expired triangle? A triangle I bought this year. Make it make sense. After hours of back and forth, I eventually met their boss. His solution? Pay the money… and buy the officers drinks so I could go. From 10am to 4pm, my entire day was wasted there. In the end, I still had to pay ₦46,000 just to leave. And as if that wasn’t enough, the officer who brought me to the station then asked me to drive him back to the checkpoint. That was the moment I snapped. I told him to get out of my car and get lost. That’s how my day went. Nigeria will humble you in ways you don’t expect.
