First game is probably my favorite game on the NES / Famicom and also one of the best Mario games ever made: Super Mario Bros. 3. Check thread for more photos. Too many innovations in this game to count. It's hard to believe that it came out on the same console that the original Super Mario Bros. was on, because the jump in not only graphic fidelity but also gameplay mechanics is truly insane. This game isn't super rare, pretty easy to find a copy, but also has decent demand. I picked it up for 3,280 yen. See the "FF" in the top right corner of the box (also on the back of the cartridge), that's the "Famicom Family" mark, which appeared on later prints. So this isn't one of the earlier original prints. I loved this game as a kid, and I still love it now. It completely holds up. And the music is still fantastic! The recent Mario Kart World versions of the SMB 3 songs are soooo good as well. The manual is physically small and pretty fun, with lots of original drawings and some story building. Compared to the U.S. manual, it has much better design elements like borders made of mushrooms, creative font usage, and it even has a full-page piece of artwork that isn't in the U.S. manual (for some reason). More photos of the cartridge and especially the manual in thread More games to come soon! #supermariobros #retrogaming

A couple months ago I decided to start collecting Japanese copies of the retro video games that have some meaning for me. Ones I grew up playing and have fond memories of. I didn't want to go too crazy at first, but it became a slight obsession for a bit. Now I have 19 of these retro games. And now that I have this many, I thought I could profile each one on here, one at a time. I played the U.S. version of these games originally, but now I live in Japan, so getting the Japanese version was my only real option. But it was also a bit fun because they come from the era when Japanese and Western releases looked quite different. So in a way they're new to me. To keep it "retro" (in my mind) I limited my collection to games up to the Playstation 1 / Nintendo 64 / Dreamcast consoles (or anything before them). In the posts I'll include photos of the artwork, game itself, manuals, other inserts, etc.. I was actually shocked at how many extra inserts and things Japanese retro games came with. I tried to collect as complete, decent quality version of each one as was reasonable (some of these games are EXPENSIVE). One even came with a bit of a cool relic which I will show later. I was surprised to learn how rare some of these games are. I've learned a TON about the retro game market since starting this. But this wasn't about the rarity or the price or the prestige. I'm not going to be flipping them for a profit. They're all just for my own personal collection. I blurred the photo of the full collection to keep it suspenseful, but feel free to guess the games. Tomorrow I'll begin the individual posts of each game. They won't be in any particular order, and I hope some people can enjoy them like I have. Also, I have a lot of thoughts on how people tend to display their video game collection (not positive thoughts). But that's a discussion for a different time.

After spending months researching, inspecting, and finally deciding on a car to buy, I learned something very important about car shopping in Tokyo: Finding a parking spot is 10x harder than finding a car.
