So often I find on X and Facebook while casually browsing is a post about the welfare system. Then the comments are full of hate and no empathy. Then I find it spirals onto my mental health and then I'm worried praying to God that I won't be homeless and destitute.

What is it about state pensions that makes even the most ardent anti socialists, suddenly seem very socialist? Is it just the misunderstanding that state pension is a benefit, and not a savings plan?

@38tori @dontdelay Income from a second home isn’t the norm with most pensioners. Although some have gone into renting to supplement their pension. A fair number of people will have more than one private pension. I won’t, I will be relying mostly on my husband. I will get the full state pension.

@TheTatteredFox @dontdelay I know they pay tax on private pensions and on savings, and if they have income from a second home etc.. but I'm rather ignorant to the amounts. It's something I need to look into as I have two private pensions and will collect state pension.

@38tori @dontdelay I know there is a ceiling. Yes it is very low, at the same time, for those pensioners who have a lot of income when they retire, not just the state pension, they will be taxed. The issue is that much of their wealth may have to go on care later. That costs huge sums!

@flickhwilliams Ive always thought that sort of thing was wrong to a certain point. She is allowed to have I believe up to 6000 in savings before they stop her UC. She could have put it into a five or ten year pension pot to avoid any issue, and retrieve it later.

My cousin’s daughter, a single mother in her 30s, received a small legacy of £10K. She declared it to DWP who immediately stopped her UC and now require her to produce 7 years worth of bank statements❗️That’s how the system punishes honesty… 1/

Interesting because lots of “sick” people a couple of years ago in my hometown who have never worked in their lives managed to all get back dated pip money ranging from around £8000-£15000 depending on the person. To my knowledge none of these had their UC stopped after receiving these payments.
