Villa looked on a totally different level to Freiburg tonight. The Premier League is increasingly becoming a Super League in all but name. Based on latest accounts, Villa generated around £380m of revenue. Freiburg generated around £140m. Villa’s annual revenue is therefore almost 3x Freiburg’s. The Premier League’s bottom clubs now receive around £100m+ per year in central distributions alone. Many Bundesliga clubs receive less than half of that. Bundesliga domestic + international TV deal is £1.1bn per season shared across 18 clubs. Premier League domestic + international deals is about £4bn per season shared across 20 clubs. I suspect UEFA and Europe’s other major leagues will eventually try to address this somehow. Because the current trajectory looks unsustainable competitively.
