Agreed, let’s ask the question anyway to make a point! Sinners: Is it a vampire movie criticizing the music industry and racism… or Black supremacist revenge porn? Most critics think the movie was a clever critique of the music industry and racism. The thing is, we see the same anti-White language all over the Black diaspora throughout the movie. Things like: 👉 White people (all White people) are “devils.” 👉 White people have stolen Black culture. 👉 White people are irredeemably evil. 👉 The Church is a White people thing, and is used to subjugate Black people. 👉 Whiteness as inherently rootless/soulless, needing Black vitality to feel alive. 👉 White women as temptresses/Trojan horses. Keep in mind that every single White person in the movie was evil; the single exception betrayed the group. The Irish weren’t chosen at random to be vampires, they were chosen because they were indentured servants and are portrayed as selling out. By making every single White person an antagonist and using specifically charged labels like “devil” and “demon,” the film moves out of the realm of “industry critique” and into the realm of essentialism. It frames one race as inherently evil and deserving of “payback.” The movie is clearly promoting segregation and Black-only spaces. It’s not clever; it takes the same anti-White rhetoric that’s all over the Black diaspora. To put it simply: The movie takes aspects of real history (and grievances) and weaponizes them to justify hatred of the “other” (White people).
