A friend of mine from law school applied on transfer to Duke (a top-10 school) after his first year at a lower-ranked law school with worse employment statistics. Transferring law schools is rare and Duke only takes a handful of transfers each year. Duke denied his application. He called the admissions office 8 times asking to meet in person with the head of admissions. They said no 7 times. The 8th time, he said “I actually happen to be driving past campus,” so they caved and told him to come in “but for five minutes only.” Five minutes turned into 45, which turned into them learning “new information” not on his application. They admitted him. I think about this often.
