🇺🇸🇮🇱 A major pro-Israel PAC just said Israel should pay for its own weapons. Read that again... J Street, one of the largest pro-Israel advocacy groups in Washington, published a policy document calling for an end to direct U.S. military subsidies to Israel. The group that exists to support Israel is now saying American taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill. Their argument is hard to counter. Israel has a per capita GDP comparable to the UK, France, and Japan. Its defense budget just hit $45 billion, the largest in its history. The shift follows a cascade of changing attitudes. Pew shows 60% of Americans now view Israel unfavorably. AOC announced she won't vote for any military support to Israel. And Netanyahu himself told The Economist in January he wants to "taper off military aid within the next 10 years" down to zero. J Street also says any future arms sales Israel pays for must comply with U.S. law, which prohibits security assistance to countries engaging in gross human rights violations or blocking humanitarian aid.
