Dear British Muslim Women I pray and wish you are content, nurtured and free. As a woman's woman I wish for you nothing other than happiness. I hope you are able to choose to live your life on your terms - and that you have peace and joy every day. But to those silenced women and girls who have suffered or fear their genitals being mutilated, who have suffered or fear a forced marriage, who have suffered or fear punishment in the name of honour, who wish they had careers but are forbidden, who dream of having their hair in the breeze and sun on their skin, who long for equal rights and agency...I am sorry. I am sorry that this country, despite its #MeToo promises and hollow feminism, is not there for you. I am sorry that the nation that saw the Suffragette Movement over 100 years ago, today plays into the patriarchal culture that enslaves you, as it does not wish to upset your husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin. I am sorry that if you are suffering and silenced, that we are too afraid to speak out in your defence. To all those that feel gagged, trapped, frightened and controlled, I will pray for you tonight.
