Tu-142 is a maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, not a strategic bomber. Does Ukraine have any operational warships beyond the few mine hunters/sweepers tied up in the UK? Nah. Does Ukraine have any operational submarines? Nah, not that I've read about. So why does Russia need maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft in this conflict? It doesn't so perhaps these aircraft are bait just like all those former Ukrainian landing ships that were part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet that the Ukrainians were allowed to sink.

Ukrainian drones struck juicy targets in the Taganrog area, Rostov region, in Russia last night. Two Tu-142 strategic bombers were struck, one even at its launching position. Additionally, one Iskander launcher was detected and destroyed as well.
