@Efyakimora You still disrespected them by how you posted about it. This even makes it worse. But here are your 💐 for tolerating the meal they served you. Only a great traveller such as yourself could be so gracious.

@ThenamesKabu This was the meal served by the home that hosted me. You didn't really expect me to disrespect them by going to buy another food, right? Does that explain "what was available?"

Now I’ve seen the comments and the quote tweets, and since I have a few minutes, let me clear a few things up. This post was about cultural experience, not finances. Travelers who only eat what feels familiar remain tourists. Those who embrace local food and everyday realities understand a place more deeply. Context matters. If your first reaction to a local meal is “they’re broke,” then you’ve completely missed the point of travel. Culture is not measured by price tags, it’s measured by experience, openness, and respect. Interestingly, on this same Malawi trip, I also shared photos of polished, “luxury” breakfasts, and they didn’t get even half this attention. It’s worth asking why negativity travels faster than positivity. If we channeled the same energy into appreciation and learning, we could change the narrative. Not every local meal is a “struggle meal.” Sometimes it’s simply what people genuinely eat and enjoy. And sometimes when you’re on the road, you choose what’s available, not because you can’t afford something else, but because you’re choosing authenticity, you're choosing to respect your host and enjoy what they served you. I’ve traveled widely enough to know the difference. Travel isn’t always curated or luxury, and that’s exactly what makes it real. Let’s learn before we assume.
Efyakimora@Efyakimora

Can you be a traveler? Eat what’s available?, can you embrace culture and tolerate everything? Good night from Malawi 🇲🇼❤️

Zambia's free education policy was a game-changer, but the dropout curve isn't bending. Why? Because access ≠ retention. Our latest article breaks down the "unseen costs" and social norms driving dropout rates after Grade 9. It’s time for evidence-based, behavioral solutions. Oh, wow! Minister Frank Tayali is seen wearing that impressive Audemars Piguet Royal Oak on his wrist—a timepiece that costs more than most Zambians' lifetime savings and could buy a small village. It seems his pre-minister entrepreneurial ventures have paid off handsomely. Who knew a role in combating money laundering at DEC could lead to such success before entering politics? How inspiring! #zambianwhistleblower #ZWB
