We found that they are able to learn to recognize the identity of ~40 vocalizers. A fast and high-capacity auditory memory for vocalizer identity has not been demonstrated in any nonhuman animals and is an important part of vocal communication in social species! 4/4

We trained zebra finches to recognize other birds by their calls using a modified go/no-go task. Subjects began by discriminating one rewarded from one nonrewarded vocalizer, additional vocalizers were added over a 5-day learning ladder. 3/4
