I really would just like yall to have my “Tabata did that shit” moment because the man can write. And whether it’s true or mere speculation it’s all fun to interpret.
I had to come back to this because it always confused me but I think this ends up being a testament to Asta’s influence on a new timeline.
So first we have to assume Salamander was trapped with Elf Fana in the reincarnation spell because Salamander hasn’t attached himself to anyone yet. We know this because Fuegoleon is 30 and didn’t have him and Human Fana doesn’t have him and she was 19. Salamander only appears with Elf Fana when her soul has been retrieved <>.
Elf Fana dies and Salamander dies with her but now there’s no spell guaranteeing that they’ll meet again so Salamander is free to choose a new host. Now remember this whole time Fuegoleon has been in a coma. Fuego goes into a coma in Chapter 36, Elf Fana dies in the Witch’s Forest in Chapter 93, meanwhile Salamander has to be aware of a host that is still alive but not conscious to receive him yet, then Fuego wakes up in Chapter 171 to receive Salamander which is before they’re able to bring Fana (and Vetto) back in Chapter 182.
But this comes back to Asta because Fuegoleon should’ve died when William/Patry ambushed him and this is implicitly stated by Lucius when he’s assessing the state of the battlefields and this is where we start speculating.

And if you really want to go into some crackhead shit, from Asta’s perspective, you could frame things in a way where the spirits end up going to those Asta finds worthy.
Yuno- he’s always respected and Wind Mages are rare to begin with apparently and boom he gets a spirit.
Noelle- the first Water Mage he comes across and gains his utmost respect but it’s already taken so she’s chosen as a proxy (foreshadowed first in the Seabed) and then later chosen by Leviathan. This was also the first time Noelle achieves her greatest magical feats. Kazam! She gets the spirits!
Fuegoleon- is the interesting one because he was the first powerful Fire Mage Asta encounters and he defends Asta’s right to be in a room of distinguished mages that have made great recent accomplishments and just morally wealthy overall. Zing! You get a spirit. BUT MEREOLEONA IS OLDER AND HAS BEEN A GREAT DEAL STRONGER THAN HIM. But she doesn’t get it because Asta hadn’t met her prior because he meets her in Chapter 108.
And then even crazier is Lucius’ perspective.
Yuno- TF IS WIND MAGIC????
Noelle- THERE’S NO WAY TB IS THIS STRONG RN?!!!
Fuego- YOU DON’T EVEN GO HERE!!!
And it’s cool because these are the only mages he specifically points out by name which then makes me think about how Mereo was mentioned by Lucius and causes me to think that Asta indirectly gave her what she needed by “giving” Salamander to Fuego.
[I’m quite aware of how insane this sounds btw]
So if Asta is the reason Fuego lived and got Salamander (due to some divine presence type shit) when it would have gone to Mereoleona- it means Mereo pushed herself FARRR harder than she would have with Salamander and Fuego obtains the well-deserved strength for already being a character with an altruistic moral framework. But Mereo isn’t just arbitrarily stripped of Salamander. It’s because of this that she even agreed to be an interim captain (to be close to Fuego) which made her learn that strength comes in the form of bonds and not just solitude and BOOM Ultimate Magic: Exolitius Leonum which brings back the members of the Crimson Lions…THAT SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN THERE IN HE FIRST PLACE AS ALSO MENTIONED BY LUCIUS IN THE SAME PAGES WHERE HE REALIZES ASTA CREATED A NEW TIMELINE.
But the fact I got any of his from on page of writing is insane in and of itself and that’s why I love Tabata’s writing.
The End
