The Digital World Is Far More Fragile Than You Think
If Taiwan stops, the world’s advanced chips vanish. But Taiwan depends on the Netherlands, home to ASML, the only maker of EUV lithography machines. ASML relies on Germany’s Carl Zeiss for mirrors and TRUMPF for lasers. The EUV light itself comes from Cymer in San Diego.
The chemicals and photoresists that print transistors? Made in Japan. The process gases — neon from Ukraine, fluorine from Japan and South Korea — keep lithography beams alive. Even the quartz for silicon wafers comes from Spruce Pine, North Carolina.
Inside the chips run copper and rare-earths mined in Chile, the Congo, and China.
And the blueprints that define them are born in the United States, crafted by NVIDIA, AMD, and Apple using tools from Synopsys and Cadence.
One break in this chain — a war, a ban, a blockade — and the world’s digital engine grinds to a halt.
