Hongzao 紅糟, the ruby red wine dregs made from fermented glutinous rice, is the center of many delicious Fuzhou dishes. Yuhua and Jinmei ayis love hongzao because of its health benefits and it is oh so tasty!

Arping Restaurant at 45 Division Street in #ChinatownNYC is a great place to eat popular Fuzhounese food! There are plenty of delicious seafood based dishes to try as seafood is a prominent staple in Fujian meals.

“Who He Was” is a story about how important family was to An Van Sing. It is stories like An Van Sing’s that show us how communities like ours in #ChinatownNYC are shaped and how special it is to have individual’s like these to be part of them.

Nancy recalls how her father who spoke Shanghainese was challenged to communicate in #ChinatownNYC as most people in the 50's were Cantonese. As many new Americans experienced, the struggles of coming to a new country could be very isolating.

Nancy’s father An Van Sing married Jean Leach. Most immigrant Chinese men in the 1950s-60s married American women as there were very few Chinese women due to the Chinese Exclusion Act. Being biracial, Nancy was often confronted by questions like, “What are you?”
