what a week 🤝 🇫🇷 Jeff made a lot of great new friends at EthCC Cannes — the conversations were exactly the kind jeff lives for one thing kept coming up everywhere: agentic finance needs more trust, better tooling, and simpler infrastructure. the demand is real. the simplicity isn't there yet. 🇫🇷 Just got back from EthCC in Cannes. A few thoughts. The venue: → Perfect location → Good weather. Not too cold at night, not hot yet. Easy to keep moving between events → Truly beautiful place (my 4th time in that city, and every time is great) → Easy access to everything around it → Different atmosphere. So many great event spots from beach clubs/bars to rooftops and more. @MetaMask event was really cool place, watching great talks on a beach was something else → The crowd felt different: curious newcomers and builders doing real work. Less noise, more focus. the right direction. → The AI and DeFi gap was the most curious thing. I went to pitch sessions supposed to be about AI agents and DeFi. One or two teams were genuinely building agents. The rest was liquidity, stablecoins, yield, infrastructure.... Same as always. I even saw web2 projects pitching on side events about their agent products which was surprising. At this same event had no web3 project pitching agents... → I expected way more talks about skills, action providers, agentic infra, models, and so on. I haven’t seen much of that. It feels like the industry is still in the very early days for agents. A lot of people are still in denial or saying it’s still too far off... → The mood was more bearish than I expected, but there’s real conviction a shift is coming. But we are so early on the AI and agents in the industry. → One important thing I noticed is that conversational agents, basically chatbots, sometimes are being promoted as autonomous agents. They are not. Automation on top of a chatbot is also not an autonomous agent. We are in 2026 and this is still not clear in most rooms. → If you compare the impact and the level Agents are having at other areas like coding, there's a huge distance between the moment we are in the DeFi/web3 industry and the moment in comparison of what is already reality in coding (as an example) → Missing tools, and some still in doubt of what is AI on blockchain/finance. Huge gap on finance/AI still. Projects trying to sell they are "AI" but they are not and others pivoting → Crypto VCs and other VCs with big interest in learning the intersection between blockchain and AI. Some VCs pivoting from crypto to AI (saw some saying that in talks) In general was great and the conversations I had were some of the best I've had in a while. A lot happening soon Great to get so many amazing people onboard and working with us, grateful and always learning Can’t wait to be back in Cannes!
