Alongside @MaureenBurkeMP and @ThomasLabour, I have been supporting the campaign for better school provision in Robroyston. By speaking to local families, the need for improved school provision is clear. If your family is affected, I would love to hear from you. By taking part

I agree it is a disgrace. Not everyone has someone to drop them off. Saying “there’s public transport” is insulting when cancer patients have low immune systems. Jumping on a bus after chemo isn’t an option. And jumping in a taxi each time is costly.

⚡️The Courier’s reporting has sparked something important WHAT HAPPENED On the 7th August the @courier_dundee published an article 📰 which described councillors feeling deterred from public scrutiny by threats of standards referrals. I contacted the paper to express my thanks that this had finally been discussed in the open. I shared some of my own concerns. I was told I was far from the first councillor to get in touch since publication — disappointing, but sadly not unexpected. I also contributed to a follow-up article (link in replies). WHY IT MATTERS 🗣️ Councillors are now speaking more openly, cross-council and cross-party, about how standards processes are used and how to protect legitimate scrutiny. EVIDENCE/EXPERIENCE Since my courier contribution I’ve been contacted 📧 📞 by councillors of different parties with similar stories across Scotland. @SpeechUnion have also reported supporting more councillors who feel pressured to self-censor. Respect for council staff is essential but deterring questions about policy, process and spend harms accountability. WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE ✅ Question decisions and evidence in public based on the facts. ✅ Keep discussion open when it serves the public interest — the why, the how, and whether the spend delivers value for money. ✅ Follow transparent decision trails (including reasons for exceptional payments/write-offs). ✅ See open reporting on improvement actions. ✅ Use confidential governance routes sparingly and only for matters that genuinely can’t be discussed in public. RESPECT ⚖️ Councillors respect the independence and important role of the Ethical Standards Commissioner and Standards Commission Scotland and we value the vital work officers 👩‍🏫👨🏽‍💻 do for communities. We can support officers and protect democratic scrutiny at the same time. CALL TO CONVERSATION 💬 We need a public, constructive conversation — with councillors (all parties), officers, @COSLA, @SolaceScotland, @AuditScotland, the ESC and SCS — about practical use of standards. Public input welcome: examples, resources and experiences will help us get this right. OUTCOME When we get this right, 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The public is better protected 💴 Money is better spent 🗳️ Trust in local democracy grows The article that started the public conversation ⬇️ 🔗 thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/530342…

This is a fantastic proposal from my colleague Cllr Carey. The process may be slow, as noted by the Scottish Government, but it’s a step in the right direction. 👏 #Glasgow

Councillors must be free to scrutinise financial decisions on the public’s behalf. Article 10 gives us enhanced freedom of speech rights to do so — protecting that principle is essential to protecting the public. This is far bigger than my own case. heraldscotland.com/news/25492389.…

📊 Scotland’s Councillor complaints system is in crisis. In 2024/25, a record 2,714 complaints were lodged — but only 128 investigated. Just 12 breaches proven. This isn’t higher standards. It’s misuse of the system. 🧵 heraldscotland.com/news/25462803.…

🚗Robroyston roundabout is unsafe. That was the message that I heard loud and clear during my street surgery with @ThomasLabour this afternoon. 🚦We will be pushing for traffic lights and renewed markings to ease congestion.
