@DylanRusinski I think there's great opportunities for art and English classes to collaborate on projects, especially creative writing. It'd be cool to have students make illustrations for a short story they wrote or something.

#TCH219Sum19Wk6 Q4 What I want for my students is to appreciate the world around them and for them to realize that they can create things to impact other people. I don't want anyone to think that they can't create meaningful things because they aren't an "artist".

@mil_peyton I think it's a great idea find ways to tie in content with student's interests. I feel like like giving them the option to provide feedback and guide their own education in a way is a good way to keep them engaged and motivated.

#TCH219Sum19Wk6 Q1. To get my students to think more critically about the material I am presenting, I plan to use resources and materials that my students find interest in. I plan to receive their feedback to get an idea of what their interests are and then plan around it.

@AudreyD42286041 I agree, I think different subjects would benefit from assessments tailored to the content. Written essays may work well for the language arts but not capture a student's understanding of skills in physical education.

@kye_lopez Yeah I liked that too, I think that's where standardized testing fails the most in making students memorize facts and figures with little to no practical application.

@ThomasScottJack This is so true. I really enjoyed the video of the math teacher explaining how he was changing his classroom to make the content relevant and applicable. It was showing the students how to use what they were learning, and being able to apply what is learned is critical.

#TCH219Sum19Wk6 Q3 I do think there needs to be some restructuring in our school's curriculum. I don't think there is enough emphasis on making connections between the content taught and what it can be used for. When I was in high school calculus I didn't know what I would-

on content that would that would broaden the students view on the content and improve their literacy. I think a way to for assessments to be more comprehensive is to give students a choice in how they are assessed (written, oral, visual) to let them prove their competency.

#TCH219Sum19Wk6 Q2 I do agree Diane Ravitch in that the testing culture of our schools is hurting them. I think it creates situations where schools that were already doing well will continue to get the resources they need to do well but struggling schools will continue to fail-

by being denied the help that they need. Also I agree that it limits the scope of what a teacher can include in their lessons. They will have to cover content that will be on the tests so there won't be consequences for the school, but at the cost of possibly missing out-

By developing their understanding of working with different mediums, influences, and tapping into their own experience, fluent students will be able to express themselves in through their art in meaningful ways.

#TCH219Sum19Wk6 Q1 For art I think having students ask and answer questions about art is a good way to foster their critical thinking skills. By analyzing a work of art they are engaging with it more than just what they physically see.

To develop literacy in art I think it's important to have students examine the influences in their life and make connections between other artists and their own technical skills.

@mil_peyton I think it's important for all of us to try to be on the lookout for new ways to teach our content and shake things up every now and again. Not just to keep the students engaged, but for our own sanity and preventing getting burnt out.

@ThomasScottJack Multiple ways of engagement is really important to keep your students interested. I believe that students really like when teachers change things up. It's refreshing to see that you are willing to use a variety of strategies in your teaching instead of having the same routine!

#TCH219Sum19 Q3 Some ways I could implement UDL in the classroom is by providing different kinds of examples. When introducing a new medium I would do a teacher demonstration, and then could provide a handout that outlines the steps and also provide video demonstrations as well.

@kye_lopez I think connecting art to something the student is already interested in is the best way to get them motivated, especially if they unsure of their skills.

@ThomasScottJack I think these are all great ideas. I think giving students a choice and some control over what they do would really help implement UDL into the classroom. The assignments that I remember most from high school were the ones where I had a choice so I think this will reach more kids

@TheReal_IzPiz I also like concepts maps for their versatility, especially for art when combining information about artists, their works, and they culture they are a part of.

Q4-#TCH219Sum19 My favorite literacy strategy to use for implementing UDL is a concept map. One where you can and graphics or other sources of media is preferred. They are super adaptable to whatever the topic is and how the classroom prefers their information given to them.

#TCH219Sum19 Q.1 One thing that really stuck out to me was honestly the first page that explained that if we aren’t careful with the language we use in the classroom, which may seem like a simple concept to us, it can actually create a rift and allow inequality to linger in the

Demonstrations allow the students to visually see how a medium is used. They also allow for the teacher to introduce vocabulary in a way that the students can make connections with what is going in the demonstration.

#TCH219Sum19 Q4 I think the most effective literacy strategy for art is demonstrations. Many students when they see a painting or sculpture may have no idea where someone would even start to make something like that.
