This year, we will open the conference on Wednesday with a day-long colloquium exclusively for graduate students. The colloquium will be led by @JoshHochschild (Mount St. Mary’s University). Accepted students will receive a scholarship to cover the conference registration, meals, and lodging. Apply by 4/14!

Stuff you might not know about St. Thomas Aquinas...

In 1273, St. Thomas is said to have had a mystical experience that led him to stop writing, saying, "Compared to what I have seen, everything I have written is as so much straw."

Aside from his academic writings, St. Thomas is also well known for his hymns, such as O Salutaris Hostia and Pange Lingua

Before canonizing St. Thomas, Pope John Paul XXII said, "his life was saintly and his doctrine could only be miraculous … because he enlightened the church more than all the other doctors. By the use of his works a man could profit more in one year than if he studies the doctrine of others for his whole life."

Legend has it that whenever the infant Thomas cried, he would immediately be calmed by being given a piece of paper with the words of the Hail Mary written on it.

In 1244, his family abducted him and held him captive for a year to prevent him from becoming a Dominican.
