@DoorDashThomist “Because modernists write extensively to hide in the details, wherein the devil is found.”
English

@Yahya562924 Btw is this a troll account? Looking at your posts made me confused. Do you actually believe Allah is time and he is corporeal established above the throne?
English

@Thomisticae Lol, you know what I meant.
Thanks. Where does he indicate this?
English

@Yahya562924 Nam id quod invenitur in creatura praeter id quod continetur sub significatione nominis relativi, est alia res. (ST I, q. 28, art. 2, ad 2)
English

@Yahya562924 St. Thomas is not in the need of agreeing with me; I am in need of agreeing him, and yes.
English

Right now, I'm at a point where I'm simply interested in the truth (I don't feel like a follower of any specific school)—and if it's impossible to know how things really are through pure reason, then I'm interested in whatever seems most probable or offers a great benefit (whether apologetic, spiritual, moral, etc.). So, if you have any interesting arguments for the Thomistic position, I'd love to read them! 😊
English

@MgrSebastianus @Lafantom3 Thanks for this! What if I showed you that the very system Molina tried to come up with to save freedom is actually its number one killer and destroyer? Would you be willing to become a Thomist again? My position is that Molinism should be the last go-to place of saving freedom.
English

Let me put it this way: for me, the main argument for Molinism is that it highlights the depth of the mystery of God's power, which enables human freedom itself to be elevated to choose what is in accordance with God's will. Thomists, on the other hand, speak of human freedom but simultaneously claim that the outcome is inevitable and decreed. Scheeben writes directly that for someone who can separate that inevitability from necessity—well, maybe that is a good explanation for them. But he "cannot afford" to do so.
I don't think I can either. I haven't yet delved deep enough to fully grasp the entire idea of middle knowledge (my goal is to read what Molina himself wrote about it), but the perspective of highlighting God's mystery by enabling the human will itself to freely glorify Him is, from a purely aesthetic point of view, more appealing than the thought of a purely causal nature where freedom seems problematic or is understood in a specific way.
Of course, Scheeben says that this issue is ultimately left unexplained, but one has to decide on something...
English

@MgrSebastianus @Lafantom3 Do you seriously believe in middle knowledge?
English

I completely agree. Nevertheless, it was precisely he who caused my turn toward Molinism when it comes to the question of grace. Previously, I was firmly on the side of Thomism.
Scheeben is one of those theologians who is praised more often than read.I don't know if you have already done so, but I highly recommend reading his chapter on predestination from "The Mysteries of Christianity" with care - though it might result in one becoming open to something non-Thomistic as well 😬.

@ofsaintthomas @HazThomist He has an original commentary called Summa Sancti Thomae Hodiernis Academiarum Moribus Accommodata, and an abridgment of the same work, called Summa Summae.
English

@HazThomist Fr. Billuart has a cursus or is that a synonym for his Summa Summae?
English

"That a positive and evident proof can be given that no contradiction is implied in this mystery [of the Trinity], this I deny; that a negative and probable argument can be given, this I concede. This suffices, indeed, so that this mystery cannot be declared impossible, yet not so as to be known as evidently possible.”
Billuart, Cursus theol., De Trinitate, diss, prooem., a. 4.

English

@Immaculata_City I'll stop replying, because this is going nowhere. Have a good one.
English

@Thomisticae Why do you take it so personal dude? I used your post to make a wider point and you guys sperg out.
English

Always found this a moot point, bc even if St Thomas never denied the Immaculate Conception, later Dominicans in his name did.
It's kind of a deflection, as granting it for the sake of argument, then what? There's still a centuries long dispute that was waged to contend with
Astro@Thomisticae
After a French bishop had accused St. Thomas of denying the Immaculate Conception, our Angelic Doctor appeared to him in a dream and said that he had never rejected it such a sublime privilege to the Blessed Virgin. The Angelic Doctor defending Our Lady even after death.
English

@Immaculata_City "Wider point" which will never made clear... I guess no one knew some Dominicans rejected it?
English

@Immaculata_City @Lafantom3 @HazThomist Scotists taught polytheism in Scotus's name... replace it with your tweet and find me the difference.
English

@Lafantom3 @HazThomist @Thomisticae I didn't say Astro said that lol. I was using his post to make a wider point and you came in filling in the blanks with all kinds of presuppositions about my position.
English

@Immaculata_City @Lafantom3 @HazThomist I literally used it as an example to show your tweet was meaningless.
English

@Immaculata_City Who said that it should be glossed over? No one. So why tweet it?! Again, I can accuse Scotus of the same and say well you see... he himself wasn't a polytheist, but some of his disciples bearing his name were, a fact which should never be glossed over.
English

I have said it several times... I'll say it again
As a historian with an interest in medieval disputation, those debates are among the most important theological discussions in the history of the Church.
**So... even if St Thomas personally did not deny it, there is still an important part of Dominican heritage that did, which should never be glossed over.**
Do you see this post, is it clear now. Should I repeat it again?
English

@Immaculata_City @Lafantom3 @HazThomist Again, not what I asked and I gave a counter-example from some Scotists who affirmed God has accidents but did mental gymnastics to say well they're not really accidents. So what is the point of all this?
