@weatherwilly Will, lots of chatter about a Super Nino coming which would presumably wreck our chance at a good ‘26-‘27 winter. Any thoughts on this? Is a SN likely to occur?

🥵SUDDEN SUMMER WITH SUMMER-LIKE STORMS I’m actually showing a dew point map this morning, which is totally appropriate given the added moisture surging in from the south. We are fully inside the Bermuda High today, with high temperatures pushing well into the 80s. The thunderstorm threat today will be focused mainly north and west of NYC, but a few storms could try to drop south after 8 PM. Any storm that develops could produce frequent lightning and wind gusts over 40 mph, with a few approaching 60 mph if enough instability is realized. For now, the strongest storms should stay north of I-287. RECORD HEAT is on the table Wednesday and we’ll be very close again Thursday. @PIX11News

@6abcadamjoseph A quirk of statistics. In NYC we’ve had 3 October snowstorms over the last 15 years. So what?

LACK OF MARCH SNOW The 30 year average for snowfall in Philadelphia is 3.6". We haven't been anywhere near that over the last 7 years. Basically, winter has ended in February since 2020 when you are looking at snowfall.

54° for an overnight low in Denver is stupid absurd. Not only is that our warmest March low by 6°, it’s almost our warmest April low as well. #COwx

@BianchiWeather @burgwx North America as a whole is experiencing BELOW average temperatures currrently, notwithstanding the western US heat. It’s absolutely frigid in all of Canada. You left this small fact out.

@Ginger_Zee C’mon Ginger! The climate on Earth has been in a constant state of flux for millennia. The extent to which human emissions, representing an infinitesimally small fraction of greenhouse gases that appear naturally in the atmosphere, are contributing to climate change is uncertain.

BREAKING: unlike what Fox News tries to preach, Mamdani has just spoken out against Islamic extremism: Mamdani: “Extremism and hatred of any kind will not be tolerated in our city. What we want to deliver to New Yorkers is a city that is safe.” The Right just keeps trying to make this guy out to be some extremist Muslim when he keeps uncovering their false narrative.

@MikeMasco I don’t understand why you and a couple of other respected mets are essentially declaring winter over for the New York City metro. There are dozens and dozens of examples of mid to late March snow events in the NYC area and the pattern seems favorable for this.

NEXT COLD SHOT INTO THE NORTHEAST/MID-ATLANTIC AROUND MARCH 17 ➡️The warm pattern likely breaks down by mid–late March as all major forecast models agree on one more push of colder air settling into the East. ➡️Teleconnections are lining up with support mainly from the Arctic Oscillation, which hints at a slight stretch of the polar vortex. At the same time, a solid ridge builds across the West Coast. ➡️I don’t think the PNA (Pacific–North America pattern) turns fully positive, but it trends in that direction — enough to support additional pooling of cold air across the eastern U.S. Will wintry weather return? The upcoming pattern features a stronger Pacific jet, which favors overrunning setups. That could mean wintry weather for interior New England while major cities lean more toward rain. It’s too early to time a phased storm, but the stronger Pacific jet should allow more moisture to reach the Northeast. MORE On the @PIX11News at 10pm Sunday Night

@weatherwilly I don’t understand why you have ruled out the coastal northeast for future winter weather during your target period. Models are showing large negative departures from normal middle and latter March. There’ve been many coastal northeast snowstorms in this kind of environment.

I am going to put there out there one more time so there is zero confusion. This is in response to my critics that are saying things to me but i dont think they have looked at what I laid out on Feb 25th. March 10th to 20th has always been my target period. I am forecasting a flip to cold and stormier conditions for New England and the interior Mid Atl. This forecast was based on what you see in pic below...strat warm and expected trends in MJO, NOT what long range models showed. Now long range models are responding which is nice but we obviously need to let the period play out and see what actually happens. Regardless, lets have an honest conversation and not move the goal posts. You can say it will be a very warm, then say oh your still wrong bc its transient cold or its not centered in the east etc. I will also not say I was right if this does in fact being a quick cold front with no accumulating snow etc.

🌺WINTER IS OVER🌺 I just cannot find a good pattern for more snowstorms in March for the Mid Atlantic and Coastal Northeast (Philly, NYC, Boston). Interior there will be more ice/snow events but smaller in scale with rapid changeover. EL NIÑO RISING — THE DEATH OF LA NINA IS SHOWING WITH EMPHASIS TOWARD FULL SHUTDOWN🌊 Watching the Pacific closely this morning, and the El Niño signal continues to slowly take shape. Warming is becoming more apparent across the far western Pacific, with early signs now extending into the eastern Pacific as well. We are gradually closing the gap between lingering cold anomalies, both at the surface and below the surface, which is a key step in transitioning away from a colder ENSO background state. Importantly, any remaining significant cold anomalies are confined south of the equator, limiting their influence on the larger Northern Hemisphere pattern. 📌 What this typically favors during the spring months: • A more active subtropical jet, increasing storm potential across the southern tier of the U.S. • Greater temperature volatility, with sharper warm-ups followed by cooler setbacks • An increased signal for wetter-than-average conditions in parts of the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Ohio Valley • Fewer sustained cold air locks, but higher contrast systems capable of producing impactful weather This does not lock in a specific outcome yet — spring is inherently chaotic — but an emerging El Niño background often adds energy to the pattern, rather than suppressing it.

@krassenstein The climate change narrative is dying in the US. More and more people recognize the left wing apocalyptic hyperbole, which has been going on for decades, is was just that. A lack of snow and lots of snow can’t both be due to climate change. I suggest you move onto another topic.

@burgwx It’s an important point. Every storm Bernie Rayno, who is terrific but along with AccuWeather busted on this storm, talks about the need for “an injection of cold air for I95 winter storms. To your point, that’s not true.

Somewhat debunking a common myth: It's commonly said that a high pressure is needed north of a coastal low/nor'easter for a major I-95 snowstorm. Generally having one does help snow prospects due to reinforcing low-level cold air advection and mitigating influence from the warmer marine layer. But in today's case, there was only a departing antecedent high. The antecedent airmass just north of the storm was cold enough that strengthening low-level northeasterly wind from the deepening low offshore was able to advect it into the Mid Atlantic with below freezing temperatures down to the coast.
