Yesterday’s fatal accident on the Trans-Canada Highway exposed serious gaps in how we respond to major incidents in Newfoundland. An accident at 7:30 AM led to the highway being fully closed for nearly 9 hours. One lane opened around 4 PM, yet traffic was still crawling 🧵👇

When an elected representative comments on a report about pay in their own province, they should understand the difference between a statistical average and evidence of same-job pay discrimination. Conflating the two doesn’t clarify the issue... it muddies it 🙃

Treating a raw average earnings gap as simple proof of “women getting paid less for the same work” or declaring it shouldn’t exist in 2026 because of discrimination ignores basic realities around hours, career continuity, and where men and women actually work in Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy.

Sheilagh O’Leary was on Open Line yesterday pushing the new CCPA report on gender pay gaps in Atlantic Canada. She framed it as proof that women are still being paid less than men for the same work in 2026. That framing is ignorant of what the actual data shows. A thread 👇
