This is a great oportunity to bother the internet with my superior media literacy!!!
ahem...
So what they did here is superimpose two scenarios. One where she lives, one where she dies. Why? they are starting a discussion with their audience. A lot of fans, more conservative ones at least, wanted the scene to be a recreation of the ps1 classic, just with better gfx. On the other hand, newer fans thought that, because the remake isn't one to one, that she would live. These two expectations were subverted, and for good reason.
Number one is simple: if you want the original scene, play the original game. Its still lit af. So, for a new ordeal, they would naturally frame it differently. But the superimposition happens because they are arguing against the second expectation.
Fans wanted Aerith to live. By superimposing a scene where she does live, with one where she dies, they can show us what would happen if she did. The game is very clear in its Stampverse identification, that there is a "universe" where shes alive, and even went on a date with Cloud. The cost though, is a dying planet with a tear on the sky. (this happens in Spitz stampverse)
THEY are being cristal clear with fans: She HAS to die. Notice that, despite framing things completely different from the OG, the fact remains: barret doesnt die at the top of Shinra tower, but the president does. Aerith still dies by Sephiroths hand, etc.
By superimposing the two scenes they get a bunch of things: 1 - they create the confusion necessary for the last game, make things hard to interpret. 2 - keep fans theorizing and 3 - keep doors open. From where I can see, they can really do anything they want in part 3.
you reaaally don't understand how well they handled this scene. A 1-to-1 recreation (fans like sebby would want this) would be criticized as phoning it in, rightfully so. It simply would not capture the magic the original had no matter how much it tried.
Saving her would generally be devastating to the story.
I have criticism towards this game, but I also loved it deeply and am not afraid to say compliment it when it works. This scene was done right.
A previous scene tho, where we should've seen a mind-controlled cloud beat aerith phisically, was cut. FOR SHAME. they did this because modern sensibilities would not allow for phisical abuse of women (despite being there in the OG) - THAT was one of the wrong moves. Censorship for modern sensibilities.
