Thornton Fire crews remain on scene today continuing to check for hot spots to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and to prevent any rekindling.
Our Investigation Team is actively canvassing the area for damage and gathering information. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The fire spread from school property to the Niver Creek Trail area and extended to the Delaware Cul-de-sac. An aggressive fire attack was initiated to stop the forward progress of the fire and protect nearby homes which can be seen in the photos. Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of fire crews, structures in the threatened area were successfully protected.
The firefighters who were injured were evaluated last night and have been released

Staying Safe During Dry & Windy Conditions
With elevated fire danger, we urge the community to take the following precautions:
• Remove high, dry, and dead vegetation surrounding structures, including fence lines.
• Avoid using fire pits or charcoal grills during windy conditions.
• Never discard cigarettes in outdoor planters or throw them from vehicles.
• Refrain from using equipment or tools that can create sparks.
Small actions make a big difference in preventing fires.

NEWS RELEASE: Thornton Police seek public's help in fatal hit-and-run crash
The Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 7 near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 14-year-old boy riding a small motorized bike was traveling northbound on Huron Street when a suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck the bike from behind. The suspect vehicle continued northbound and did not stop.
The boy was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Huron Street was closed for several hours while officers conducted the on-scene investigation.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to help locate the vehicle and driver involved in this crash. The vehicle is believed to be a black BMW sedan with Colorado license plate FBWX60. Thornton Police have partnered with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to issue a Medina Alert for this vehicle.
"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion."
License plate reader (LPR) technology played a key role in the investigation, helping officers identify the suspect vehicle and providing the information necessary to issue the alert.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information related to the suspect is asked to contact #ThorntonPD at 720-977-5150.

⚠️ Important information from @CityofThornton about the ongoing CodeRED outage and cyberattack. 👇
CodeRED, the emergency alert platform used by the City of Thornton, has notified customers of a targeted cyberattack, which resulted in the theft of user information from its system. If you created a CodeRED account for emergency alerts and used that same password anywhere else, change those passwords immediately.
Thornton’s Police and Fire Departments continue to have a number of resources to utilize to notify the public during an emergency. This includes the IPAWS alert system through FEMA, social media notifications, local news outlets, and door-to-door communication, if necessary. As before, we are asking residents to follow us on Facebook, X, Nextdoor, and Instagram, and be sure to turn on notifications.
Thornton is evaluating its contract with CodeRed and options for future emergency notification services. CodeRED informs us that the data taken includes user names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and associated passwords. We will update the community as we learn more information about the data breach.

The red-light cameras at 88th & Washington are installed and ready to go! Starting this week, these cameras will begin capturing violations for warning notices. Our two mobile speed vehicles will be out across the city doing the same.
The warning period gives drivers time to adjust before full enforcement begins. This program is being launched to help reduce crashes and slow down dangerous speeding in high-risk areas.
