The Great British Delusion As regular readers will know, for several years now, I have been trying to persuade anyone who will listen that if you want to address the widely-shared concern about the pace and scale of mass immigration - Britain’s most salient political issue - it might be helpful to understand what’s causing the problem in the first place. The conventional explanation of mass immigration among critical commentators is that “woke ideologues” in the civil service and the political halls of power believe that bringing more people into Britain is an unquestionable moral good. On the fringes of the Right, some even murmur of various theories of the “Great Replacement” which range in emphasis from elites bringing in compliant and desperate foreign workers to avoid providing good working conditions and fair wages to native workers, all the way through to Jews conspiring to replace white people with third-world immigration. Whatever the exact flavour this perspective comes in, the idea is that mass immigration is happening for primarily ideological reasons. Likewise, advocates of mass immigration believe that anti-immigration sentiment is also motivated by ideology (hating immigrants/being racist etc) rather than reality. What has been clear to me for some time, however, is that both of these claims are only partially true. Yes, some, as New Labour advisor Andrew Neather explained, wanted to “rub the Right’s nose in diversity”. Yes, many in Britain as a whole and in Westminster in particular think that immigration is an axiomatic moral good. The problem is, however, that this does not explain why a series of Conservative governments, elected on increasingly vociferous promises to bring immigration down to the “tens of thousands”, continued to ramp it up. Facing the threat of Farage, who tore chunks out of the Tory vote year after year, they instead proceeded to set new immigration records, culminating in 2023 when net annual immigration exceeded 900,000. It’s also true that some people don’t like immigrants. But the idea that this motivates a significant portion of the opposition to mass immigration in a country like Britain is absurd. According to that infamous far-right, anti-immigrant rag The Guardian, British people are statistically some of the most welcoming towards immigrants in the world. Put simply, both sides are misunderstanding what’s happening, often on purpose. My view is that much of the concern about immigration comes from two practical realities. First, mass immigration on this scale is necessarily displacing. I’ve only lived in Britain for 30 years, and no one can tell me that the country and especially its major cities have not been completely transformed in that time. Many of the people who live in London today are either unconcerned by or actively in favour of these changes. But that’s partly because most of the people who were concerned have left. Now multiply across every city in the country and many of their suburbs. You don’t have to dislike people to not want the area where generations of your family were born, lived and died to become alien to you within the space of two decades. In that same timespan, the British people have been getting poorer. As I keep saying over and over, Britain’s GDP per capita is lower today than it was in 2007, before the Great Financial Crisis. Ironically, this is also why parties of every stripe have brought in millions of people into the country: we don’t evaluate economic performance on GDP per capita. Instead, we measure GDP itself and itself alone. That is the equivalent of measuring how prosperous your household is without accounting for the number of people living in it. A household income of £100,000 per year is high (by British standards, at least - more on this later) but what matters a lot more than that is how many people are in your household. A single person living on £100,000 is in a very different position to a family of 5 who are effectively getting £20,000 a year each. The explanation for why Labour and the Tories let immigration run rampant was best summed up by legendary investor Charlie Munger when he said “show me the incentive and I’ll show you the outcome”. If all you care about is the headline figure, why not hand a bedroom to your in-laws to top up your “prosperity” with their pension? When described like this, it sounds, frankly, insane, yet that is precisely what our politicians are incentivised to do. They are judged on the country’s total GDP. The easiest way to increase it when you’re busy strangling your economy with Net Zero, high taxes and endless regulations? Bring in more bodies. This really isn’t complicated to understand so why do so many people in Britain, who clearly feel the economic pain, nonetheless refuse to see it? To see that mass immigration is an attempt by badly incentivised politicians to deceive them about what’s actually happening? Instead, they cling to their support for mass immigration and the seductive (but false) idea that they are struggling because “the rich aren’t paying their fair share”. A report this week, however, has opened my eyes to another reason - one I had never considered...

I’ll save you the study. There’s more than one reason. Here’s what nobody wants to say out loud. Porn and video games give young men the feeling of achievement without actually achieving anything. Why grind in the real world when you can win from your couch? We infantilize young men - stopped holding them to high standards, and then act shocked when they become men who meet none. More women in the workforce mathematically means fewer opportunities for low achieving men. High performers are fine. Everyone else got edged out and chose comfort instead of leveling up. And the foundation was already broken before any of that. Record numbers of boys growing up without fathers. Raised by single mothers who love them but can’t show them what a man looks like. No male role models. No example of what showing up actually means. You can’t expect men to play a role they were never taught.

⚡️The thing underneath all of this that nobody will touch is that society decided men were the problem and then acted surprised when men started disappearing. For thirty years the cultural message aimed at men has been some version of you are the issue. Toxic masculinity. Male privilege. The patriarchy. The message wasn’t always wrong in its origins but it metastasized into something that told an entire generation of boys that the thing they are is fundamentally broken and needs to be fixed before they’re allowed to participate. So they internalized it. Not the strong ones. Not the ones with fathers who counterbalanced it. Not the ones with natural confidence that overrode the messaging. The average ones. The ones in the middle of the bell curve who needed guidance and structure and got a culture that told them their instincts were dangerous and their ambition was suspect and their masculinity was a disease to be treated. Those boys are now the men in this segment. Late twenties. No career. No direction. No sense of what they’re supposed to be because every model of masculinity they were offered was either vilified or sanitized into something unrecognizable. The aggressive drive that builds companies and families and civilizations was pathologized. The competitive instinct that pushes men to achieve was reframed as toxic. The provider identity that gave average men purpose for thousands of years was dismissed as outdated. And nothing replaced it. That’s the part that matters most. The old models were torn down and nothing was built in their place. The message was stop being that but never here’s what to be instead. So a generation of men just stopped. Stopped trying. Stopped building. Stopped competing. Stopped striving. Not out of laziness. Out of the rational conclusion that the game as presented to them has no role for them that isn’t apologetic. The women who surpassed them in payroll jobs didn’t do it in a vacuum. They did it inside a system that spent decades building infrastructure specifically for female advancement. Scholarships. Programs. Mentorship networks. Cultural encouragement. Legal frameworks. Title IX. Every institution in the country oriented a piece of itself toward helping women succeed. And it worked. Women are outperforming men in education and entering the workforce at higher rates because the system was rebuilt to produce that outcome. Nobody rebuilt anything for men. There is no equivalent infrastructure. No programs. No cultural encouragement. No institutional focus on male development or male purpose. The assumption was that men had all the advantages already and didn’t need help. That assumption was true for the men at the top. The executives. The politicians. The wealthy. It was never true for the average man who needed structure and direction and purpose the same way anyone does.

Why are women reacting negatively to this? I thought that women being out of the workforce and staying home was a horrible atrocity that men inflicted on them against their will. What's wrong with men paying reparations by being oppressed in the same way?

Where did lib women get this idea that taking care of kids and a home is "servitude" or "free labor." You know that's your house, right? Those are *your* kids. When you take care of a home, your reward is a nice home that YOU get to live in! It's not random labor for someone else's house! And when you take care of your kids, YOU get the benefit of spending time with YOUR kids and raising them how YOU want to. 9/10 women born in the 1970s had at least one baby. That's nuts to me. Even the idea of 8/10 in my age group having at least one baby by the time we're 45 seems high. I live in an ultra-low-fertility city, so my personal experience is skewed.

The real U.S. fertility story is the massive drop in fertility among women in their 20s. The birth rate for women in their 20s has fallen nearly 40% over the past two decades. This is the group that has carried the most weight in determining the direction of the overall fertility rate. As we all know, women's prime fertility window is in their 20s, not 30s or 40s. Relying on women to catch up their fertility in their 40s is not going to help much. @FamStudies:

There is this bizarre assumption that many of my single friends in their late 20s/early thirties experience in which men don't think they desire children or being a SAHM because they are currently "boss babes". ALL of the ones I know desperately want those things, but in the meantime, as intelligent crafty women, they have built thriving careers. To assume they wouldn't want those things makes no sense, considering out of marriage, they can't have kids or a SAHM lifestyle.
