I hate that passport stamps are slowly becoming a thing of the past. They were one of the coolest little souvenirs you could collect without even trying. Now half the time you just scan your face, walk through a gate, and that’s it. Kind of depressing if you ask me. That shit genuinely pisses me off.

I sense a strong divide; like two worlds forming side by side on the same plane. I feel it dividing friends, families, nations. What I don’t feel is an in-between; I’m not sensing a gray area in this divide. It just either is or is not.

Calypso herself is literally, canonically a goddess. Her father is a titan and her mother is a sea nymph. She is herself a part of the mythical, divine world. She’s on that island because Zeus exiled her there for supporting the titans in the cosmic war. “Believing in gods” wouldn’t make sense here. In the texts, she offers Odysseus immortality and eternal youth if he stays with her, a divine gift a mortal could not give.

@lowkeybandss @Thunderland @AyoCaesar Which can be attributed to Calypso also believing in gods, which the movie doesn’t truly reinforce are actually there, or she directly knows. I’m not arguing for either way, I’m specifically saying Nolan left it to interpretation, which I think is brilliant.

Nolan leaves open the possibility that the gods aren't real – it's a time of "apparent" magic, and the monsters elements are recounted by Odysseus to Calypso. When it's revealed that Athena (SPOILER!!!) comes wearing the face of a slain temple novice, then disappears after his confession to Penelope, the film is kind of pointing to the idea that the supernatural/divine is just a way of making sense of things which are too vast and scary to comprehend, like trauma or the power of nature!

I can see it being interpreted that way; I just personally feel it’d be dismissive of everything that preceded Calypso to say all of that was him hallucinating on lotus flowers because then what happened to his men? The Cyclops didn’t eat them? Circe didn’t turn them into pigs? There was no punishment for eating Helios’ cattle? There was never any divine wrath for their actions, he’s just on drugs on an island? I can’t think of any other adaptation that implied all of this was misremembered and there are no gods or titans in this mythical tale.

@Thunderland @AyoCaesar But the entire point she is making is that this is all told to calypso from a drug addled Odysseus, so it could be possible that he is misremembering things as well Since after that, nothing blatantly supernatural happens. Which imo makes the movie better.

@Thunderland @TheCineprism It makes no sense, Athena was supporting Odysseus in the books. She clearly is a supporter of his even post the trojan horse. It was not a sin like the movies portrayed them.

@Johnysilverh7 @TheCineprism Supernatural beings, be it gods, goddesses, angels, demons, ghosts, ancestors, etc, taking physical form amongst peoples of the natural world is a human myth. You’ll find such tales amongst many ancient and even modern cultures.

It's really funny seeing people who've now seen Nolan's Odyssey but have never read Homer come away thinking "Agamemnon has aura" when in the Iliad he's the biggest good for nothing loser shithead ever.

Circe is mostly considered a goddess even if a minor goddess. Circe and Calypso both are clear expressions of the fact that this is a mythological world we are exploring. If Circe exists then so does Helios. Calypso exists then Atlas exists. The Cyclops is a child of Poseidon, meaning Poseidon exists. I don’t think that just because they aren’t front and center in this film that that means gods don’t exist amongst the people in this world. Thus I stand by my interpretation that it was Athena herself.

@Thunderland @TheCineprism She is the daughter of the Titan Helios and the Oceanid nymph Perse, yes. She’s mostly classified as an immortal sorceress but she wasn’t portrayed as goddess in nolan’s movie. Calypso, again is a nymph in exile. We don’t have any gods or goddesses from greek pantheon.

Circe is the goddess of magic and is the daughter of the god Helios. She’s in the movie. Calypso is an immortal nymph and the daughter of the titan Atlas. She’s in the movie. Gods walk amongst people in Nolan’s movie. it’s highly plausible that goddess Athena, daughter of Zeus is in the movie amongst people and it’s not a wild interpretation to say it was Athena herself they beheaded.
