⚠️OPINION⚠️ I've been meaning to say this for a while. And there's no better time than now after what we saw towards the end of the show. What we were witnessing with that severely resisting suspect, is in my opinion, a perfect example of how some aspects of modern law enforcement have been negatively affected by the presence of, and fear of, cameras watching officer's every move. While cameras have arguably raised the level of accountability, some officers have become so obviously terrified of bad public perception, that some have ceased their willingness to use the levels of force that would be lawful and appropriate force to effect and maintain safe control of suspects. That lack of gaining and maintaining appropriate control can have, and has had, dire consequences for officers and the public in many instances. If you can't properly obtain and maintain appropriate physical control of a handcuffed suspect using no less than three or four officers, those officers and possibly the department as a whole may need retraining in proper and effective use of force. Including an updated use of force continuum. In short, F the cameras. Yes, they're there. Yes, they will capture and amplify every mistake you make. But please, always remember to do what you KNOW you need to do within lawful and appropriate means to obtain AND maintain CONTROL of a suspect and therefore the situation, so hopefully, you and everyone around you can make it back home, alive. Since so many of you are asking I will address this with a tweet. Yes I am going to Florida. I am still sorting out details with TWC, but I wanted to get the newest data before making a decision. I am going to be on air Monday morning from 6-9am on @AMHQ then traveling with my producer @StevePetyerak and our team to Florida by early afternoon. By then a location and back up will be determined. Thanks again for asking.
