No other ancient document holds my interest and affection quite like this papyrus, written in Egypt and in the Armenian alphabet. It's a goldmine of linguistic evidence not for the Egyptian or the Armenian language, but for Greek! My introduction to it: open.substack.com/pub/dannylbate…

This has to be one of the most breathtaking sights in the world. Khor Virap monastery in Armenia, with the snow-capped Mount Ararat rising right behind it. Otherworldly beauty!

YUZBASHI SARGIS TOROSYAN Armenian officer of Ottoman army March 18, Turkey celebrates the Victory Day of Çanakkale. This is about the Gallipoli or Dardanelles operation, which was developed by the Allies, England and France. It was planned to capture Istanbul by sea and defeat Turkey, forcing it to withdraw from the war. The operation was developed and led by Churchill. If the Allies had won, the Armenian Genocide would not have occurred. Ironically, an Ottoman army officer, Yuzbashi Sargis Torosyan, played an important role in the victory of the Turks. On March 18, 1915, Allied warships entered the straits. The Turks initially let them pass, then opened fire with land artillery. Yuzbashi Torosyan was the commander of one of the artillery batteries, who sank the first Allied ship. Yuzbashi Torosyan later managed to sink other ships. For this bravery, Sarkis was praised by Javid Pasha, and the Minister of War Enver Pasha awarded him the Ottoman Army Medal (Osmanlı Devleti harp madalyası). The award certificate has been preserved in the archives (see the third picture). Days after the victory, the Turks began the massacre and deportation of Armenians. Sarkis appealed to Enver and received from him an insurance policy for his family in Kayseri. However, this did not help. His father Ohan and mother Varduhi were killed. Only his sister, Baytsar, survived, and reached Palestine (see the second picture. Sarkis found his sister Baytsar in one of the Palestinian refugee camps). Upon learning of the massacre of his family and the massacre of Armenians, Sarkis leaves Turkey, goes to Bulgaria, Romania. From there to Palestine, where he finds his sister and his beloved daughter, Cemile. However, Baytzar and Cemile soon die of diseases. He himself fights against the Turks on the side of the British. Later, he went to Cilicia and continued to fight against the Turks as part of the Armenian Legion. In Turkey, they naturally try to silence and forget the bravery of the Armenian officer because of his Armenianness.
