Some of you knew Darrius as the voice behind Hit the Mat. I knew him as my friend, Darnell. If you followed us on Twitter, you saw the jokes and the back-and-forth insults—we stayed roasting each other. But off the internet, for the past eight years, that was real friendship. The kind that goes way deeper than business. Darnell knew my kids’ sports seasons. He asked about school. He checked in on my family like it mattered—because to him, it did. We texted every week—sometimes life updates, sometimes just sending each other funny dog reels, or recipes we swore we were going to try. He loved his dogs so much, and you could see it in how often they came up in conversation. They weren’t just pets—they were his people. He loved his wife. He adored her sense of adventure. The way he talked about her, you could hear the respect and the love in every word. He was a phenomenal martial artist, but what made him special was how much he cared about self-defense as a whole. He wanted people—especially women—to feel capable, confident, and safe. That passion went beyond technique. It was about protecting yourself and knowing your worth. He was also insanely creative. Whether it was ideas for the sport, content, or just the way he saw things, his mind worked in a way that made everything more interesting. And on top of that—he was hilarious. Quick with a joke, always ready to laugh, and could take it just as well as he gave it. We aligned on so much—politically, religiously, music, movies, even our shared sweet tooth. Honestly, it’s probably a blessing we lived far apart, because if we didn’t, we would’ve both been 550 pounds living off desserts and calling it “research.” In this industry, loyalty like his is rare. Darnell had my back, always. If someone was talking sideways or spreading something untrue, he didn’t stay quiet—he made sure I knew, and he stood on our friendship every time. No fake energy. No switching up. Just real. He had the biggest heart. The kind of person you wanted in your corner, because you knew he meant it. I already miss him. And I know I always will. Rest easy, my friend. 🤍
