It is crazy to say we can’t keep the ball and to not give our best recycler in that squad, Mainoo, a single minute - we ended up with a midfield of Anderson, o Reilly and James, (with konsa playing wing back). He might as well have played Dan Burn up top from the outset and told Pickford to put it in the mixer.

That ferocious second-half response earned Argentina the win. Thomas Tuchel will have to face the music for England trying to defend the lead for so long and camping in their half. Argentina were too dangerous for that to work for such a long period.

In the end, that was embarrassing. Argentina went behind, brought on attackers, dropped the niggly stuff, and started playing football based around Messi’s calm control. England brought on centre backs, completely ceded the initiative, and paid the inevitable price.

I like the Duncan Edwards comparison. He was by all accounts a great powerful all round driving force of a player, who Bobby Charlton said could have been England’s greatest. Jude may fit the mantle that Edwards sadly missed.
