A tube would work fine, but it must be one that is “rated” for radial tires. A plain old butyl rubber inner tube won’t handle the flex and motion described above in a radial tire sidewall. An inside patch MAY work, at least by leaking slowly and not blowing out, but all of these repairs are problematic for a similar reason; the constant flex in the sidewall makes glue adhesion problematic.

Radial tires are designed for the sidewalls to allow a very large amount of movement (flex) as the tire rotates under load. The relatively extreme amount of flex makes both plugs and/or patches ineffective and especially dangerous under high speed and full load. Patches in the tread area work reasonably well because the radial belts are relatively rigid. Patch the sidewall and you put yourself and passengers at risk of a catastrophic “blowout” type sidewall failure.

I am absolutely livid. I took my car to the shop to have this tiny nail pulled out and plugged. The guy looked me in the eye and said, 'It's in the sidewall, you need a new tire.' It is clearly on the tread!! He refused to fix it and tried to sell me a $200 replacement. I told him he's a crook and drove off. I’m just going to plug it myself in my driveway. Am I the crazy one or is he just trying to rip me off?? 🛞🙆🚗🤔💬
