Forty years ago today, I received the first of three patents for my invention, the Diaper Deck—the world’s first wall-mounted commercial infant changing table designed for public restrooms.
McDonald’s, Sears, and state highway rest stops were among the first to install them. Renee, our son Matthew, and our friends’ baby daughter, Emily Ekbom, became the very first models featured in the Diaper Deck brochure.
What began as an idea to make life a little easier and safer for parents eventually became the first patented commercial infant changing table and helped pave the way for what is now federally required in public restrooms across America.
Looking back after 40 years, it’s amazing to see how one simple idea can grow into something that touches the lives of millions of families.
