Bryce Harper switched from No. 34 to No. 3 when he came to the Phillies because he didn’t think Roy Halladay’s number should be worn by another Phillie. I asked him today what his thoughts were on the number being retired.

Bryce Harper is back in Phillies camp, and he shared his thoughts on the WBC. He pushed back on some of the criticism that the United States received during the tournament: “I think the worst notion that anybody had for Team USA is that we didn’t care.” philliesnation.com/2026/03/philad…

This clearly meant so much to the Venezuelan players and the country as a whole. It’s cool to see baseball have that effect.

@agentilis92 It’s as perfect as it’s going to be. Calling this slop is delusional

The great part about the WBC is that it’s on at a time when there isn’t good baseball being played. It is perfect as is. I don’t get the obsession with moving it to the All-Star Break.
Bob Nightengale@BNightengale

Mark DeRosa believes every player would volunteer to play in the WBC if it’s moved to the All Star break. ‘They would be more prepared and more dialed in, and we'd be dealing with way less restrictions and way less guidelines on the pitching if it was moved to midseason. No question about it.’

@agentilis92 You have a team led by Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes and Bobby Witt Jr. It’s never going to be perfect

@TimKellySports “it is perfect as is” nothing better than seeing a dude with 8 starts start a game and be relieved by a journeyman. this is definitely not slop

@contradecline That would be cool, in theory, but the reality is they are always gonna play these at climate-controlled stadiums (or in California) because they can't risk rainouts.

@TimKellySports The All Star Break would allow WBC games to be played in the best stadiums, most of which are too cold for early March baseball. Imagine the WBC at Fenway, Yankee Stadium, CBP, Camden Yards, Wrigley, etc.

@MartinSalgado48 You would probably have more players not competing because they are injured and/or want a break during the middle of a 162-game season.

@TimKellySports You’d be crazy to thing it wouldn’t be bigger than mid season baseball if all the stars are playing and it’s once every 4 years.

@TimKellySports I can name 15 pitchers, probably more, that I’d rather have over a guy who’s made 8 MLB appearances.

@TigsTown @Mariano04230215 A ton of pitchers opt out of the All-Star Game because they've already gone through more than half a season and this is their only time to catch their breath before the season ends. Guys don't want to be going all-in during their only break.

@TimKellySports @Mariano04230215 What? Why? The biggest issue with the timing of the WBC right now is that it takes the players and especially pitchers away from their traditional pre-season routine. Pitchers haven't refined their repertoire or built up enough arm strength, and hitters don't have timing down.

@Mariano04230215 They'll probably be more likely to opt out altogether if it's in the middle of the season.

@LttleGel He probably wouldn't have done it at all if it was the only time during the season that players can rest at all.
