@lithgowflashman @AJGardineresq @brentcostelloe Except Peter George topped the poll in Franklin and Kristie Johnston and Vica Bailey (Greens) were 1,2 in Clark. Then there are the North and NW which helped form Tasmania’s footy tradition and will effectively be excluded due to financial imperative of the stadium.

@TimLaneSport @AJGardineresq @brentcostelloe Hi Tim It certainly hasn’t divided the city. No doubt some folks don’t love footy and a handful that do, had a bone to pick with the AFL or AFL tas and turned it into a social issue. As Peter Gee said to me yesterday. It tuned into a left wing cause that should never have been.

@usopen @atptour @carlosalcaraz John McEnroe has paid this match the most perfect compliment: said the two players made him proud that he was once a professional tennis player. From one who for a period in time was the best in the world it was high praise and uplifting in its humility #AO

Book 46: Chasing Shadows by @TimLaneSport and Elliot Cartledge. Purchased from @bookgrocer - I really enjoyed this. Aside from the compelling storyline of Peter Roebuck, you get a strong by sense of fairness and thoroughness from the authors.

52 books in 52 weeks in 2025. Book 1 - The Carnation Revolution by @oneferny - borrowed from a friend. Tapping into my 🇵🇹 ancestry. A solid retelling of the end of the Estado Novo regime. Vivid portrayals of the Lisbon on 25/4/74 as well as the rivalries among the revolutionaries

My piece about the proposed AFL stadium in Hobart is about what happens when the AFL comes to town, how it displaces things - city visions, other sports funding, other tax priorities - and how the AFL has become so very good at getting what it wants. smh.com.au/national/when-…

@piersmorgan To paraphrase a long ago, old-school footy club administrator down here: there’s only one thing better than retaining the Ashes five-nil and that’s doing it with a little help from the English weather 🤣🤣🤣

FFS. Has there ever been a less-deserved retention of the Ashes? From the Bairstow debacle to this rain-soaked fiasco, it’s an absolute farce that smirking Australia have ended up with the urn still in their hands. England comfortably the better side as this Test showed. Gutting.

Question: would Bairstow do as he did with the ‘keeper up to the stumps? Answer: no, because he’d be aware the keeper would likely lift the bails. So, MCC experts, does the ‘spirit of the game’ apply differently depending on whether the ‘keeper is ‘up’ or ‘back’? #Ashes23

So, Ben Stokes says the umpires had somehow implied that it was ‘Over’. Well if they did, it was absolutely their responsibility to adjudge Bairstow not out. That they didn’t means this isn’t about Australia contravening the law. Which leaves ‘the spirit’.

Wow.. Aussies getting into angry confrontations with booing MCC members as they return to the pavilion. Never seen that.. but then I’ve seen an Australia side show so little regard for ‘spirit of the game’ in an Ashes Test..

@piersmorgan Magnificent innings by Stokes but utterly disgraceful of Carey to take that catch off a totally accidental miscue. And Smith to take Robinson. Hardly fair play old chap. What!

If so called ‘friendly fire’ isn’t made punishable, it must now provide overwhelming evidence for the defence at some tribunal cases. Over to you AFL. #AFLCatsDees

Australia’s greatest Ashes Test win in my lifetime, edging out Old Trafford 1961. Atonement in both cases: for Laker-imposed humiliation in 1956 and for Edgbaston 2005/Headingley 2019. And in both cases an Aussie skipper worked a final day miracle. Bravo. #Ashes #Ashes2023

You gotta 💚 a US Ambassador to 🇦🇺 who’ll gladly be hauled up a giant tree in our threatened forests. It was really something to meet Ambassador Caroline Kennedy today, & to talk about what makes this island so precious & rare. Big thanks to @TheTreeProjects too. #politas

Lovely to hang out with US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy. We went 60m up a giant eucalypt that’s grown for hundreds of years in Tassie’s southern forests. Such a travesty that this and other forest giants are scheduled for logging. Massive thanks to @TheTreeProjects for hosting us.

@PictureSporting Interesting to look at Milburn from waist up: he looks like a strong, fit young man. From waist down he looks pre-disposed to putting on weight. They still talk of his 243 inside two sessions at the Gabba in 1968. #TheNatural
