PUBLICATION DAY! I am delighted to announce that Gothic Precarity: Fear and Anxiety in Twenty-First-Century Fiction is published today! Writing this book has been a journey into the shadows—into the ways fear and uncertainty shape our culture, our literature, and our sense of ourselves in the twenty-first century. The Gothic has always been a literature of unease, but today it feels especially urgent. From climate crisis to political instability, we live in precarious times, and fiction often gives voice to those anxieties when we struggle to name them ourselves. My hope is that this book shows how contemporary writers continue to deploy the Gothic mode to capture the fragility, dread, and resilience of our moment. This project wouldn’t exist without the support of friends, colleagues, and mentors who encouraged me when the task felt overwhelming, and of course without the writers whose work I’ve had the privilege of exploring. So today isn’t just about a book—it’s about conversation, community, and the stories we tell to make sense of our fears. My dear Mum died 11 years ago today. I think of her every single day. I miss her every single day. Grief, though normalised, is never absent. She shone. She still shines in memory and in the faces of my two wonderful daughters. Her she is, on the day of her wedding in August 1959, with her father. It will always be that day. It will always be so many special days.

John Eric Bartholomew, AKA Eric Morecambe, was born 100 years ago today. Few people in history have made as many people laugh as Eric, and as someone whose life was dedicated to that purpose, I am sure it is an accolade he would have been incredibly proud of. For me, Eric’s brilliance lay not just in the laughter he created, but in the anticipation of the laughter to come. That gift was omnipresent, following him like a comedic halo. To see him was to smile instinctively, followed quickly by genuine laughter. His friend Tommy Cooper possessed that same rare quality, and I have many treasured memories of watching them both when I was young. Thanks to social media, Eric’s work continues to be enjoyed by millions worldwide every day, and appreciation for his immense talent only grows. Long may that continue. Here he is, with Ernie and Mr Preview, creating some 22 karat TV comedy gold. God bless Eric Morecambe x

To my Labour colleagues we criticised the Tories for chaos and division and we cannot now inflict the same on the country ourselves. People are angry and hurt, yes. But turning inwards helps nobody. We have a King’s Speech in two days. Calm down, unite, and get on with the job.

Sensing real anger on here this morning. It’s not the press job to try and force a change of PM, set their own political agenda. Their job is to report facts, and articulate them in a way the public understands. There’s enough drama in the World, the country just wants normality.
