The yell "Ice out!" started in northern New England but is especially popular in Minnesota, which is colder and has more lakes. It means ice layer on top of a lake has finally melted in the Spring. "ICE out!" means something else but is also a cause for celebration.

I spent last week visiting the Minneapolis Fed. Always fantastic to interact with the Minnesota macro crowd, but this visit was different. Never seen a city so united and determined. In every encounter, even the most random, their civic pride was shining. Thank you, Minneapolis.

ICE out! It has been painful. There has been a lot of suffering, human and economic. There has been unwarranted violence and criminal activity by federal agents. But the people of Minnesota won! yahoo.com/news/articles/…

When I think about it, we actually have a closely related term in American English from the McCarthy era: Red-baiting. Roy Cohn, who seems to have been a mentor to Donald Trump, was famous for red-baiting but was discredited in the late 1950s.

Saki @SakiBigio makes a great point. I speak Spanish, but it is Spanish from Mexico and Spain. Terruqueo is purely Peruvian, with etymology from Quechua. Terruqueo = Labeling any left-leaning politician as a "terruco" (terrorist) to invalidate their proposals.
Saki Bigio@SakiBigio

The Peruvian verb “terruqueo” should be translated to American english. We need an efficient verb like that to go straight to the point.

Many Democrats are crowing about their "victory" in getting President Trump to "fire" Gregory Bobino. I think that they are being naive. Trump is an expert at distracting attention our attention. I expect him to do something like invading another country.

Minneapolis IS America. These are the darkest days in our country during my lifetime & yet the people of Minnesota have made me proud to be an American—no small thing when the administration does so much to bring shame to our country. We stand with Minnesota ✊🔥⚖️🌈🗽❤️🤍💙 If you need people to show up there, please say so

As an economist, I am proud that one of the world’s most respected scholars in my field is speaking up for his community, Minneapolis. In 1915, the US became the first country to formally codify academic tenure as protection for those who seek truth based upon principles of the Enlightenment and scientific discourse. The principle: professors kept getting fired for criticizing the powerful. Society needs people whose profession is the search for truth to have job security. When government misleads or withholds the truth, we need them to speak without fear. The academic community must ask itself: what are our obligations when force is used against US citizens in broad daylight by masked federal agents who cannot be readily identified, while official accounts are contested by contemporaneous video evidence? Most people cannot speak out for fear of losing their jobs. We can. It is no coincidence that one of the first actions of despots throughout history is to harass universities and the free press. Each individual voice may not change much. But a collective one—each in their own community, their own networks—can. So we must. The right to free speech. The right to bear arms. The right to assemble. The right to be secure from unreasonable seizure. The right to due process before the government takes a life. In Minneapolis, bystanders’ videos raise serious questions about what occurred and about subsequent official statements. These questions deserve clarity, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law. This is no longer about immigration. This is no longer about left or right. It’s about right and wrong. And about what America stands for.
Tim Kehoe 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽🇺🇦@TimTkehoe

The situation in Minneapolis is bad. There is a lot of criminal activity, almost all of it perpetrated by federal agents. We are depressed, but at the same time we are proud of our community. The community's will to resist Trump and his goons is stronger than ever!
