Following a Henry Jackson Society report presented in Parliament last month on cryptocurrency laundering, 26 MPs and peers have now urged the Foreign Secretary to sanction Kyrgyz enablers of the Russian stablecoin A7A5, a tool that has facilitated an estimated $100 billion in sanctions evasion. @Alexbrowder_ @TomTugendhat

Read the Observer newspaper front to back so you don’t have to. I fear the left/centre left is repeating the same old mistakes. Articles arguing Brexit will be reversed because public poll against it now, that a stronger EU relationship is needed as special relationship with US is ‘stone-dead’. Smart people write polemics against populist leaders - Trump, Orban - and frankly condescending pieces about their supporters. Everything is fake news and polling. The Democrats will win the midterms as support falls for GOP after a war no one wants. STOP. We are making the same mistakes as we have for two decades now - waiting for the pendulum to swing in our favour as people realise their mistakes. The truth is people are lost because what’s in front of them is broken. The best thing we on the left can do now is stop to understand why, and develop answers to halt and reverse decline. Why rejoin an EU that clearly is powerless? Why rejoice a hallow electoral victory when it’s just another case of people voting against the other guy? Why have a foreign policy so reactive and introspective that it has the by product of rewarding despots and murderous dictators? And where is our plan for an economy that actually delivers higher living standards (hint the answer isn’t redistributing an ever dwindling pie with a mythical wealth tax.) Our politics has fallen so far - it must be about a plan and an agenda for the future. Now, tell me where I can read about that…

On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington, uniting the United States, Canada, and 10 European nations in a historic commitment to collective defense and peace. Then, and now, it stands as a powerful example of what strong alliances can achieve. 77 years later, emerging rhetoric from Washington risks undermining the very coalitions that helped secure Allied victory after WWII. Now, as global tensions mount, the United States must remain a steadfast partner to its European allies and its commitment to peace. I look forward to 77 more years of transatlantic partnership. @NATO

Merz: We discussed Russian oil and gas deliveries with the US President in the G7 this week. Six members clearly said this sends the wrong signal. This morning we learned the US government apparently decided otherwise. We think this is wrong — there’s a price issue, not a supply shortage. I’d like to know what other motives are behind this temporary decision.

Public sector borrowing down by 11.5% so far in 2025/6 compared to 2024/5. This is a sizable reduction, it's happening because this government is focused on improving our public finances and the economy - alongside making sure we are getting investment up for the long-term.

We exit this season’s Emirates FA Cup at the Fourth Round stage. What a journey it has been from this group of lads 💙 FT - Macclesfield FC 0-1 Brentford FC
