@MichelleWelshMP is appointed as the government's first Maternity Advisor. The DOHSC says Welsh will champion the voices of women and families let down by maternity services.
She is the Labout MP for the Nottinghamshire constituency of Sherwood Forest.

🔴Breaking News - Appointed as Government's National Maternity Advisor
Today, I am honoured to announce that I have been appointed as the National Maternity Advisor to the Government.
This role is deeply personal to me. Before I was a politician, I was - and always will be - a mother. Like far too many women across this country, I know what it feels like to come through childbirth carrying both physical and emotional scars. That experience has shaped me, driven me, and strengthened my determination to fight for safer, more compassionate maternity care for every family.
Please see my statement below ⬇️

@Victoria_Rixon @wesstreeting Is this your explanation of why you left?
English

As an ex NHS whistleblower I call for @wesstreeting to resign IMMEDIATELY from his post. You have failed in every aspect & deserve to be unemployed. Like me. Like many.
English

@Victoria_Rixon It's a shame there are people that aren't honest, ethical, honorable and integrous within the system.
Tell me, what prompt did you give chatgpt for it to write such a thought provoking and revelating post?

All bereaved parents deserve independent, transparent reviews of their cases — carried out by genuinely trustworthy experts chosen by the families themselves, not appointed by institutions with vested interests.
Any thorough examination must be willing to consider all relevant research, including ongoing questions and reported concerns around Covid vaccines and their potential side effects — such as impacts on blood pressure, mental health, pregnancy outcomes, and broader long-term health. These concerns must be investigated openly, rigorously, and without dismissal, so that families can have clarity and confidence in the findings.
Systemic failing is not the answer. No one is standing for that.
Public trust cannot exist where governments select their own reviewers and control the narrative, leading to outcomes people feel are predetermined.
We have seen thousands of deaths, yet so many families are still waiting for accountability, answers, and meaningful judicial outcomes.
True justice should be for the people, led by the people — with honesty, independence, and integrity at its core.

I crossed the finish line today.
26.2 miles.
In a bear suit.
For my son Zac.
He never got the chance to take a single step.
So I ran every one for him.
For awareness. For dads like me.
For babies lost to Group B Strep.

Let’s talk about #maternity regulation:
@nmcnews @gmcuk @CareQualityComm
@MichelleWelshMP has set out clear concerns about systemic regulatory failure — a pattern of warning signs missed, and of women, fathers and partners being ignored for years while poor performance went unchecked.
As a bereaved father and maternity campaigner since 2019, I’ve met with these regulators many times. My experience aligns with what Michelle describes: they have failed.
They are continuing to fail women and their babies. They are failing staff.
All regulators must now be held accountable. Given the scale and persistence of these failures, the only credible route forward is a statutory public inquiry.
And when a system becomes this deeply flawed — as many families feel is the case with @gmcuk — it is reasonable to ask whether it is fit for purpose at all.
Families deserve safe, effective regulation. Right now, that standard is not being met.

#maternity
@MichelleWelshMP highlights that any maternity commissioner, cannot be a figure head role. It must carry real authority, independence, and the power to act decisively.
Regardless of whether the role is ultimately created, that principle stands. Any commissioner must operate without fear or favour, backed by genuine authority and the ability to respond quickly.

In 7 days I take on the hardest challenge...26.2miles in a bear costume.

'One Born Every Minute? They should change the name to one killed every 11 hours': As Channel 4 feel good reality show returns, one mother sums up the anger of the thousands failed by NHS maternity care
I hope Channel 4 seriously considers postponing filming at such a sensitive and critical time for maternity safety.
if filming does go ahead, will it resemble a @CareQualityComm pre-announced inspection with fresh paint on the walls, no shortage of equipment? I assume given the widely reported staff shortages you will struggle to find an available midwife to feature?
I know families whose babies were so badly let down by the NHS that they are not expected to survive childhood. Is that something your programme is prepared to confront?

Let’s talk about @NHSResolution
A bereaved mother’s words highlight something we cannot ignore: the harm families experience doesn’t end with the original event.
At a time when mothers, fathers, partners and families should be given the space to grieve, to heal, and to begin rebuilding their lives, too many instead encounter systems that deepen their suffering and complicate their path to recovery. That must change.

I know what it’s like when people look away from your child and your pain. I can’t support a review that shuts out so many voices.
Ahead of meeting @wesstreeting tomorrow, we ask that no harmed family is left behind by the UHSussex maternity review.

Delighted to share some recent client feedback recognising partner, Nicola Wainwright, and solicitor, Carla Mennillo, for being 'professional, kind and compassionate' throughout an 'extremely emotional' inquest.
