When we were brainstorming ways we could celebrate America 250, we kept coming back to finding a way to capture all of the unique things that make baseball special.
We asked ourselves, if we could show someone a collection of things that truly captures and defines what baseball is, what would we show them?
To answer that question, we scoured our archives, polled our writers, and reached out to fan communities to find 250 things that define baseball. Clutch plays, ridiculous feats of athleticism, batting stances and windups, drama-filled games.
But a ranked list of 250 things lacked stakes. Frankly, it wasn't very fun to read. Instead, we chose 25 categories that collectively represent every facet of the game we love, categories that forced us to think beyond the obvious. Then, we made a top-10 list for each.
Some important notes...
- We will reveal one top-10 list every weekday over a five-week stretch that begins on Tuesday, August 4
- A play can only appear on one list. If you don't see something you'd expect to see on one list, it might be coming up
- That said, limiting categories to Top 10s forced us to make some tough choices. This isn't the 250 most important plays in baseball history; we forced ourselves to be more expansive and embrace all of the different things that define baseball
- When all the lists have been revealed, you will be able to create your own definitive top-10 list from the entries. If you could only pick 10 plays or moments that define baseball, what would you pick?
Welcome to 250 for 250.
