Hunter teachers have called for more class preparation time as they say they are increasingly "under the pump". In a survey of more than 840 teachers from Newcastle, Wallsend, Charlestown and Port Stephens electorates, the NSW Teachers Federation found that many were stretched beyond capacity.

The needs of students are more complex and diverse than ever. It's crucial that additional public school funding is spent on the things that matter, to ensure it reaches the students who need it most.

Early career teachers are the future of our profession, yet too many are already burning out. We're calling for a national early career guarantee including reduced teaching hours, classroom release time for mentors, an orientation program & structured networking opportunities.

People with disability deserve to sit at the table - not a place off to the side. That was the message teachers took home from Rethinking Ability, the Centre for Professional Learning's special education conference held at Federation House on 3 November. Thank you to Daniel McDonald, visual artist and disability advocate, who gave a stirring keynote address, recounting how his experiences as a Deaf person have informed his championing of people with disability in public life. From establishing small group tutoring programs in every public school, to increasing the number of trained educational support staff in classrooms - additional funding can be used in ways that make a real difference to students with complex needs.
