Today in London, the AI Safety March organised by @PauseAI and Pull the Plug brought together a broad coalition calling for stronger safeguards on artificial intelligence.
The message was clear: we still do not know how to safely develop advanced AI systems, yet billions are being invested to scale them at speed while regulation and safety research fall behind.
Recent research from the Ada Lovelace Institute highlights a widening gap between public concern and government action, suggesting policymakers are out of step with how people feel about AI’s growing role in infrastructure, public services, and everyday life.
The march today marked a significant moment, with diverse organisations and communities uniting around shared goals of safety, accountability, fairness and democratic oversight of powerful technologies shaping our future.

“We actually are social beings, so when people are systematically atomised and alienated, then they get mentally ill, they get aggressive, and they start doing bad things. [...] What's the solution to that? The solution is to shut up. Come to the assembly and you talk, we listen.”
@AyoCaesar in conversation with the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil, @RogerHallamCS21.

@TimeToAssemble_ @JeremyIClarke @SortitionNow Ofc there are many variants of sortition just as there are of election. In my forthcoming book Sortition and Socialist Democracy I will be arguing among other things for a purely random lottery with no stratification; but there may be other points in there you won't like either
English

I'm glad this has been published. Naturally I don't find it convincing, & I doubt you will either; but the author seems sincere & we should encourage critics of sortition to try & spell out what they don't like about it

Sortition is sold as the solution to our democratic deficit. Michael Chessum (@michael_chessum) argues that it is a chimaera ripe for undemocratic manoeuvres. prometheusjournal.org/2025/11/04/aga…
English

@EdmundGriffiths @JeremyIClarke @SortitionNow To be clear, full sortition of this nature isn't the thing on the menu. It's one valuable democratic formation amongst many. But it's how we are selecting for the House of the People, a proposed replacement for the House of Lords:
houseofthepeople.uk
English

@EdmundGriffiths @JeremyIClarke Fair enuf 👍The kind I described, with stratification is the one proposed by us @TimeToAssemble_ and also @SortitionNow:
sortitionfoundation.org
English

@JeremyIClarke @EdmundGriffiths Sortition has weighting for selected demographics. So it can ensure much *better* representation.
For example, a sortition-based National Assembly selecting for gender, for example, should ideally have 2% more women than men - as that reflects how the UK is made up.
English

@EdmundGriffiths As sortition is entirely random, how does one ensure that minority groups are represented fairly- or even at all?
If YP membership is say, 10% non-white, then if 8 members are selected by sortition for a committee, there'll likely be 0 non-white members. Tyranny of the majority.

As I argue in my new book, the success of radical projects depends not on lofty ideology but on the details of how we organise. The Devil is in the Details.
This Friday I’ll explore how the founding conference of Your Party in November should be run — the structures, processes and culture that can make or break it.
Join us. Either it’s a mass movement or it fails. Let’s get to it, one and all.
